Probably carbon build up in the heads. At 110,000 miles I would doubt a bad EGR valve. A timing chain rattle would be evident all the time.

A PATS system in a Ranger disables the fuel pump. When my 07 wouldn't start, the service advisor told me the PATS system shuts down the fuel pump.
