Default 1981 Ford Ranger [Questions]

So I am going to be getting a 1981 Ranger in about a week so I want to learn about all the goodies i can put on it.

It has a 302 Windsor V8 and is still in original owners hands (My grandfather). It has low miles and he only used it when he was hunting so it is in great condition he waxed it after every weekend of use.

What kind of tune-ups can I get to make this thing a beast!
i.e. Straight pipe?, lift kits, tires, flowmasters?

thanks guys! this is also my first post

Technically, this is the wrong forum for that truck. Your truck is actually an F100-F350, with the Ranger denoting the trim level of the truck.

BUT, since I myself own a 1980 Ford F150 Ranger Lariat, I'll be more than happy to answer your question.

Just like any 70's to 80's vehicle, that 302 is probably bogged down severely with emissions junk. To get any kind of power from it, you're looking at least at a new cam, lifters, timing gear set, new distributor, aftermarket intake, and aftermarket cylinder heads. Just those few mods will wake that 302 quite a bit. If that still isn't enough, you can tear the motor apart, bore it out, utilize better pistons, upgrade your valves/pushrods/valve springs/etc. Once you rebuild the motor, you better upgrade the rear gears because I'm almost certain you have a pretty poor gear ratio in the rear axle. You may also want to beef up the transmission so it can handle that built 302.

As far as lift kits go, is this a 4x2 or a 4x4? You may not want to lift this truck if you're not a patient person and/or you don't know anything about alignment.lol.

As far as tires and wheels, that's completely up to you.

By the way, the 302 is not a Windsor motor. Most 302's weren't cast at the Windsor Casting Center.

Hi my name is mike and I'm new to this whole forums thing.... I just recently bought a 93 ranger 5 speed, 2wd. I went to fill it up yesterday and it took me about 20 min to put almost 8 gal in the tank, just curious on if the is a problem amongst all this age or just certain years and how I would go about fixing it??? Any info or words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated...

Mike H

He seriously needs to find another gas station that changes the filters when they clog up.

speaking of windsors, i am a big fan of the old windsor 351. pretty hot engine back in the day. threw me off with the 302 windsor thing...

edit: I wanted to take the 351 out of an old junk 69 torino, and put it into my old 83 diesel ranger body (i know its absurd) after my bro got done driving it. but the torino found a new home before I could swipe it.
