Default home-made coilover conversion brackets?

i've been trying to find a cheap and easy way to install coilover shocks in my ranger but all i can find is discontinued kits or massivly overpriced kits (upwards of $1500) my question is, does anyone know how i can build my own shockmounts for coilovers strong enough for a prerunner? or has anyone built there own (successfully) and could maybe tell me the specs and measurements to take?

ive seen people who built there own mounts made of 3/16th steel i believe and made a sort-of box shape welded to the top of the frame to make room for longer coilovers, but this seems to be dagerous as there is no support for the back of the shock and seems like it could damage the frame. but this also seems the easiest way and more plausible for home fabrication seeing as i dont own a pipe bender... is this a safe way to install coilovers, or is there a better way? any advice, photos, or directions would be greatly apreciated

good luck getting things from ballistic. their track record is quite poor when it comes to order fulfillment.

the OP of this thread is the manager of an ORW that used to make a kit, he built this mount and may be able to make more.

i saw that one as well, i kinda mentioned it in my first questions... it would need a crossmember for the things ill be doing lol that would make it a larger task than i want to do right now im going to do a little at a time till i can get a pipe bender.

----------

if anyone would like to build me a set for coilovers, i would buy them! i like the look of the tube style... its simple if you have a pipe bender. LET ME KNOW! we could design them and maybe make a new thread for it for others interested in home fabrication.

either way, if you buy those 'hoops' from ballistic, you'll want a cross bar over the top of the motor to keep from bending them.

btw, pipe is for sprinklers and tubes are for fabricating.

lol i gotcha, my plan was to get something like those hoops and weld a tube from the top of the bend and triangulate it to the frame to give it a lot more support. the box thing takes up too much room to do that, id have to find another way

the triangulation would work. what've you got in the way that's keeping you from doing the plate type mounts?

the plate is welded to the top of the frame in that link you posted, and thats where id be putting the brace. not to mention it would be a b@#ch to weld behind the plates lol

look at the pics closely, he welded the back plate on the side facing out, then welded in/outside of the side plates. that's similar to what i've got on my truck for the 2.0 shock conversion and it's held up to everything i've put it through

Ballistic is just one of many fab shops selling universal coil over kits.

The ranger frame is weaker than any steal you will weld to it so you will need to plate and or box the frame in the front to help distribute the load.

The front of the frame is already boxed

Its 1/8 inch

might as well be sheet metal, it needs some extra in that area if you plan to actually wheel it with coil overs.

Also keep in mind the frame crumple zone is just behind the front upper control arm mount, and that is not boxed.

Its up to you.

Just make sure you have the shocks in double shear.
