Default Bad alternator from Rock

FYI. Needed to replace my alternator so ordered a NEW replacement from Rock Auto, brand was Pure Energy. Installed and still no charging, after much troubleshooting concluded the NEW alternator was defective. Uninstalled, took it to Auto Zone for testing and it was defective, no charging. Product box stated it was tested three times before leaving factory. Yeah right.

So bought one from Auto Zone and had it tested before I walked out the door. Installed and everything OK. Have read other posts on this issue and it seems others have had similar experiences.

So my recommendation would be to buy an alternator from a local store and have it tested before you walk out the door. Save yourself a lot of time and aggravation. Same goes for similar parts like starters, etc.

The problem I had with DB was concerning a 200 amp alternator listed as "High Output" . I had it tested and it was not even in the ballpark of 200 amps.
I hope they have gotten better over the years.
Buying an alternator at Oriellys, Advance Auto, and Auto Zone is a Chinese crap shoot unfortunately.
I have only used Rock Auto for OEM parts

The "High-Output" is because you need to be at 3000+ RPM's and is a commonality among H/O reman alternator companies.

All of our alternators put out half of their amperage at 1200 RPM's, so a 250a alternator in an application which we have is putting down 125a at 1200RPM

I dug out the paperwork for that particular alternator. 140 amps at idle speed and 200 amps minimum at 2000 rpm with the under drive pulley included. After the alternator failed just after the 1 year warranty expired, I bought a Mean Green alternator rated at 225 amps for $400. The Mean Green did exactly what it claimed. Like most people, I tried to save $100 and it eventually cost me $675.
