02 Ranger brake repair. $600???

Hello everyone.

I have recently aquired an 2002 ford ranger. After some inspection I realized that the rear breaks are shot. Pads, drum, hardware, e-break, everything needs replaced. I took it to a mechanic and he is quoting me $600. I think this seems pretty high and I do not plan on going through with it. Is this ballpark or I am right??

Sounds normal to me... while I don't know what all it takes to do all that stuff I know labor rates usually average $90/hr... add parts and it doesn't take long to add up... any reason you don't want to/can't do it yourself?

Thanks for the reply. I am away from my house and do not currently have access to a garage or many tools. I am afraid to drive the thing very far with just front breaks even though they do most of the work. I have about a 300 mile drive on friday.

Well you could always beg someone on here to help you out... or make the shop an offer. Tell them you can only afford to spend $500 and see if they go for it. We charge $84.50 per hour for labor at our shop though so it doesn't take long to add up.

Sadly, it sounds about right. Sure you could probably find it somewhere cheaper but who knows...Parts would probably run you about half of that and then the other 300 could be labor and miscellaneous crap.
