Default removing spare tire hoist

This is probably a silly question, but I could not find a thread on this particular topic....

I need to replace the spare tire hoist on my 02 4x4 Ranger. Bought the truck used and it needs a few details attended to before my son can drive it around the state. One is a spare tire and hoist. The cable is fine but there is no end - so nothing to hold the spare. Go figure.

2 bolts hold the hoist mechanism to the plate under the bed. Easy to get those off, but how do I slide the mechanism out? It seems to be too big to slide out. Do I need to bend the plate it mounts to? Is there a trick to this that I am missing?

Thanks for your help.

Remove passenger side bed bolts. loosen driver side bed bolts. lift passenger side bed while another person snakes the 'crank' out of there. That's about the only way. That or total bed removal/set on stacks of 2x4's. The reason is there's a recess in the bed floor for the crank thing.

Thanks for the info.

What kind of bolts are they? Seems like Torx. I should go look at another truck

My truck came with a spray on bedliner so the bolt heads are covered. I suppose I need to dig/cut them out. Looks like 3 on each side - 2 sort of in the back and 1 up front. How would I re-cover those so that water etc. does not work its way under the liner where I cut it?

Nothing simple is ever easy...

Just replaced the spare tire hoist without removing the bed. A little crow bar action pulled the plate down just enough to slide the old hoist out. Another tip, the old screws are self tapping and the new hoist's holes are not tapped, so run those screws in and out, to cut the threads before you get under the truck.

Thanks for the info. After much searching, glad to find this solution (and forum). After buying a 55 Torx wrench and some WD-40, it was pretty easy. Now our son's Ranger has a spare tire Glad we didn't have to deal with a spray in bedliner.
