Default 4.10 gearing opinions

hey guys. im completely new to forums in general. so i came on here for some advice. i have a 4.0l manual ranger lifted 6 inchs. im currently running 33's and have 31's for winters. i have 3.73 gearing at the moment. i found a fx4 donor with 130xxx on it. was thinking about swapping entire drive line into my ranger except for engine trans and transfer. to gain l/s rear end and 4.10 gearing. my truck sucks off roading at the moment with 3.73's would this satisfy me? i dont do any serious off raoding just an hour or 2 a week. i do lots of street.

4.10s would give you better acceleration and would take some stress off of your tranny

I'm currently running 33's with 4.10 gearing and I have no problem. There is definitely plenty of power and its still good on the highway

Well, assuming you have the same era of truck, yes you can do that. If you are 97- then no. Different suspensions.

As long as you are 98+ you will be A-ok. Make sure you swap both the front and rear diffs.

4.10s are alright for 33s. Been running that combo for awhile now. Cant wait to go to 4.56s though.

thanks guys. yes i have same year as doner fx4. its from a buddy of mine and i sold his trans and transfer for him so he is giving me a deal on the parts. the diff still have org black paint on them, in great shape. im getting all axles, drive shafts, cvs, and breaks assemblys for $350. good price?

and also will my truck be more resposive in the mud? right now i cant even use 4 high going up steep sand hills or through any sort of thicker mud cuz the engine just cant handle the 33s.

hell no!

You only need the front diff, hell, I have 4.10 gears for sale for the front. You should be able to snag an expo 4.10 axle for around $150-200. More bang for your buck if you can get into a 31 spline 8.8 with disk brake!

mine still seems slugglish sometimes on trails with 4.10s. They would most certainly be better than what you have now.

why do i only need a 4.10 front? i have 373 front and rear? i figured that front and rear, all drive shafts (since 2000 ranger front drives are bad and my 6 inch lift eats them) cvs, axles, tubes and diffs was worth that. i know to get it done pro here is around 1600. and i cant do it myself, im no where near rippiing apart diffs. to many measurements.

He meant you only need the front in addition to the rear end.

Well in that case, it would be a good move since you could upgrade to live axle.

But yeah, I was just saying, you could slap the ring gear and pinion in your diff.

Id go for it.

Wouldnt a shop have to do it in order to shim it correctly?

I think 350 is not a bad deal to get 4.10s, and the live axle setup. Is the new rear end L/S?

----------

I just noticed it is L/S. I say do it!

Can you get the brake rotors to go with it? You will have to but new hubs. Personally i think it would be silly to swap a wear item like that.

I dont think so...

I think if you have OEM parts just putting them on should be fine. I did that with my rear when I changed to 3.73 from 3.27. Just bolted the ring gear on and installed a new crush sleeve on the pinion, torqued down and have not had any issues.
