Default Wheel backspacing/offset charts

Since there has been a few threads on here with people asking about which wheels would fit,I think this chart will be helpful to look at before asking the questions:

some more info:
Zero offset - the hub mounting surface is even with the centerline of the wheel.

Positive offset - the hub mounting surface is toward the front or wheel side of the wheel.

Negative offset - the hub mounting surface is toward the back or brake side of the wheels centerline.

Backspacing of a wheel is the distance from the hub mounting surface to the rear outer most edge of the wheel.

In more common terms:
Positive offset: moves your wheel closer to the brake side (tucks it into the fender)

Negative offset: moves your wheel away from the brake side (makes it stick out past your fender)

*of course the amount of offset will determine how much you stick out/tuck

how to measure your backspacing:

I'm hoping this info will help eliminate some of those "will a xx wheel fit on my xx yeah ranger". Also, The diameter of the wheel does not matter for any of the above info so if you have a 15" wheel or a 39" wheel, those number will stay true...

Tom, I have the exact ruck as you, and i am going to install a 3" body lift. Then run the same tire as you 32 x 11.5 x 15. I will need new rims, probably a 10", so what will I need for an offset or will I need one

As a further clarification for others, what is the stock offset? 0 at 4" for a 15"X7" wheel and 0 at 3.5" for a 14"X6" wheel? I believe that is the stock offset but I want to make sure before stating it as fact.

"Technically" the chart in your link has the backspacing or offset incorrect for all of the 9" wide wheels they offer. The other wheel widths they indicate are correct & match.

A 9" wide wheel with a backspacing of 3.5" will have an offset of -38mm...not -43mm as listed in your link.

Although that difference of 5mm is less than 7/32 of an inch (typically not the end of the world) - your link still isn't "technically correct".

Backspacing is always related to offset. It's a formula.

Pure mathematical formula:
Backspacing – [(Wheel Width + 1)/2] * 25.4 = offset

Using the 9" wheel width & 3.50" backspacing selection from your link:

3.50 - [(9 + 1) / 2] * 25.4 = -38.1mm offset (AKA -38mm nominal).

Because the two measurements are always related to each other - If two wheels have the same width & identical backspacing they will always have the same offset as each other.

For a given wheel width, if one changes - the other changes. Always.

In summary - your link has something "funky" with it when it comes to the 9" wide wheels. Either the backspacing isn't really 3.5" or the offset really isn't -43mm...but it cant be both.

If a 9" wide wheel really had an offset of -43mm - it would have a backspacing of 3.31".

I have found this website and others like it extremely helpful in picking wheels for my ranger. I thought I should contribute because it was so helpful.

I decided to purchase Cragar Soft 8's in silver. I chose 17x8 wheels. They are 4" back space and zero offset. I believe that essentially means that where they mount to the truck is in the very center of the wheel.

For tires I went with 235 65 17's. I used a tire size calculator to compare these to stock in order to determine how much taller and wider they would be. The overall diameter increased by 1.63 inches. The new tires are 0.39 inches wider.

I went with this size because I wanted to fill the wheel well up a little more with rim and not tire. I wasn't looking to raise the truck per se, just give it a more modern look with more rim than tire. I also did not want to go with fancy aftermarket wheels. I can really appreciate the stock look of a truck and chose these wheels because they are found on many trucks with stock wheels. ( mostly gmc and Chevy work trucks but..)

Chuck, I'm glad that I ran into your post as I was wondering how those wheels would look on a ranger. I like the plain jane wheels too and I think they look great! I'm not sure if you'll ever come back on here since you only have 1 post, but how have they been holding up and hows the ride? Thanks.

He mentioned they are the Crager Soft 8's in Silver....which are a very, very common steel wheel chosen by members here (cheap & available).

Most go with the black Soft 8's - but it's the same steel wheel. Industry standard really. Should be pretty easy to find feedback on them.

I'm sure you'll find a bunch of Rangers sporting those wheels here: Ranger Wheel Reference Page

I have a 93 Ford ranger 4x4 and I am buying new rims. I want the tire to sit little farther out then stock but I don't want to skate it. What -off set should I go with.

I am looking at these on jcwhitney. Do you think they will work for what I need
