Tire replacement suggestions
My 07' Ranger XLT when new, came with Continental Contitrac P225/70 R15 on it.
These tires look VERY small on the truck but I have seen other Rangers with the same type of tire. It looks like there's plenty of clearance though so a bit larger of a tire would be a plus.
In the owners manual, I could not find the recommended tire size but it to say to replace with only P 9all-seanson) tires.
The truck is a 2wd, 3.0L engine, 5 speed automatic, 59k miles.
It is used mainly for commuting 1 and a half hours per day. I'm in the Chicago area so I drive in the snow.
Last winter it slipped pretty bad with normal acceleration from a stop and now it does this even when it rains at times. I have added sand bags but I'm still nervous with the winter almost here.
Any tips/recommendations are welcome (size, brand....)
Thanks

Re: Tire replacement suggestions
I personally have a 2000 4x4 and I'm actually about to downsize from a 31 inch tire to a LT235 75 R15. I got a smoking deal on some General Grabber At2 and from the reviews online and from what they look like in person, I'd suggest looking at a set of those. They're generally cheaper than BFGs and some people prefer then over BFGs.

Re: Tire replacement suggestions
Thanks Analogy,
I will look into those. Any negatives about moving up to a P235 75 R15 form the stock P225/70 R15?

Uhm I don't think it's enough of an increase to decrease any fuel mileage, but it all depends on how someone drives. Also they're not big enough that you'll have to worry about rubbing.

There are plenty of tire threads on here, and I suggest you use the search feature at the top of the page or visit a site such as www.tire-rack.com to research and read reviews. I have the exact same setup and am in the same situation as you. There are plenty of tires on the market and from what I've been reading I am interested in Cooper Discoverer, Goodyear Duratrac, Firestone Destination, or Cooper Maxx. A larger tire size typically equals a higher priced tire and the possible reconfig-uration of the speedometer. I would stick with stock.

Thanks.
Tirerack is exactly where I have been doing a lot of research but they don't even list Coopers or Duratrac for my model.
At an NTB, I was told that there weren't many options in my stock size and they recommended 235's but not passenger grade as the manual recommends.
I like that site but it's left me more confused in several ways.

I felt the same way when looking on tire-rack. It might be better to give them a call and talk to someone or go to a local tire shop or garage and see what they think and can do.

Re: Tire replacement suggestions
235 would be ok. My opinion on the BFG vs the AT2's.....BFG is much better and worth every cent. I have both tires and the AT2's are absolute garbage off road. They are good on road.

Yeah, I haven't even got mine on yet, but I don't do much off roading so I should be good, but the reason I recommended them is because he said his trucks for commuting and he drives it over an hour everyday, I assume on roads.

Correct, no off-roading here.

Re: Tire replacement suggestions
I was justing thinking, basically your probably best bet is to get a tire that's gonna meet your driving habits and needs. So since you do a lot of road driving, a tire with good tread wear and not a super agressive tread would be best. Do you drive in the snow at all?

I agree and I just went through this with my wife's Ford Edge. She has 17 inch tires compared to the Ranger's 15 inch. One idea is to find the tires you want and have them shipped to a store like NTB. Tire-Rack will ship anywhere and then you can have a shop mount and balance them or find a local tire shop based on recommendations. For street driving, I don't think it makes as big a difference because it is the thick tread you're after vs. tread and the tire being able to hold up to off-road abuse.

Re: Tire replacement suggestions
Hey Jerry,
I too myself got confused after visiting both Tire Rack and Discount Tire when I needed new tires. They have what I like to call an information overload. But the P235/75/R15's shouldn't do anything to your truck. That was the stock tire size on alot of ranger models for a good number of years. Here's what I had installed on my ranger:
A local tire shop here in the area suggested these tires. They're called Wintermark and they're made by Cooper Tires. I got them for $88 bucks each and they're excellent for Rain, snow, and mud as well as daily driving. They come with a white ring on the side wall, but I had them mount that on the inside so it wouldn't look bad. Plus with these tires and if you roll into the throttle when you start, should never get stuck. My truck is 4x2 and since I got these tires, I've never gotten stuck.

I checked prices on Tire-rack, but with the cost of shipping added in I was able to find similar prices locally.
Is there a number on a tire that tells the tread thickness?
I won't be off-roading but with the snow and long commute I do need good traction.
