I have a 97 Ranger XLT. in the door it says the wheel size: 14x6 and tire size: 225/70R/14SL. I'm trying to get some used wheels and tires from different shops and auto salvage yards but these tires seem to be very hard to find. i do find a lot of 235/75/15's though. my question is: without aftermarket suspension or body lifts would the 235/75/15's fit my ranger or should I keep looking for the recommended size? i'm trying to scrape by right now, until i can save enough money to get a suspension lift later on. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks!

Yup. 235/75/15 = 29x9.5" and will fit easily.

And 14x6 wheels = LOL.

15's will look way better - and tires are way easier to find.

98 I think is when they went with 15" as the standard size

dont throw out your 14" rims though, a lot of trailers have the same bolt pattern and the std. tires on rangers fit trailers pretty well. could save you some money since trailer rims and tires are expensive. just an fyi

What is the gear ratio in your truck?
You are talking about going from a 26 1/2" tire to a 29" tire, that is going to throw the speedometer off a little, and may cost you some mpg.
I am not saying you should stick with the 14", I wouldn't, but I might try to find something like 215/75/15, they are 26 3/4".
Your deciding factor should include you rear end gearing.
I thought they quit putting 14" on Rangers back in the early 90's, except on some fleet trucks.

Hi. I have a similar problem. Went to get snows for my 2006 2WD Ranger with 225/70/15 tires and dealer said I should get 235/75/15 s. Will I have any poblems or notice any difference in performance or MPG with these. He said the narrower tires will be better in snow and the height won't be a problem.

235/75/15 is WIDER than 225/70/15.

Narrow tires are better in snow, particularly on the lightweight Ranger, but neither of the sizes you listed are wide tires. Either set would be fine. The extra height of the 235's isn't an issue. They would fit fine, and might smooth out the bumps in the roads a little better. As far as MPG, the difference in size is minimal, not likely to affect your MPG. Choice is yours.
