Default Is bigger better?

I am looking for a good all round tire. The big nobby tires eat gas but the highway tires don't do much on the back roads. Does anyone have a good all round (no pun intended) suggestion for a tire that doesn't compromise mileage but still gives me some bite? Recommended tire sizes would be appreciated too. I like the bigger tires. I have 16 inch rims

I have Hankook Dynapro ATM's in the stock size and I couldn't be happier with them. They have a little bit of road noise but its nothing to bad and as far as mpg I'm getting about 18-21 with a 4.0L.

yokohama geolandar ats. i have a set of 33s on my truck, buddy who hooked me up has a metric 33 on his f150. awesome in the dirt so far, wear really well, great wet traction, not too loud, and not a very aggressive tread as opposed to a mud terrain so there isn't the sacrifice with fuel economy. they're baja proven too, the f150 my buddy has his set on has seen numerous mexico trips to chase for the baja 1000 and 500 with zero complaints. that truck also did a run from socal to tahoe in feb thru mammoth with fresh snow and ice. hooked up well, but as soon as we pulled off into deep powder we had to use 4L to get moving.

edit: and according to my friend bob, bigger IS better.

BFG A/T's FTW! I got OVER 80k miles on my set of 32's. EXCELLENT tire. By far the best tire I have every run. I currently have them on all my vehicles. 235's on newbie, 245's on plow rig and 265's on the expidition.

----------

My dad also finally bought a set of 235's. After he refused to listen to me when he bought tires for his F-150. That winter he was constantly breaking traction with the american prospectors A/T's. He put the 235 BFG on his 2.3 2wd ranger and absolutley loved them. Even with 2wd he said he never broke traction and the tires hugged the road like he was on rails.

42" pitbull rockers. Great for city commuting, wonderful traction wet/dry, and only a lil road noise.

X2, i have 31" M/T's and get not to bad of mileage around town. and i get 22mpg on the highway... But I like bigger tires. so i vote bigger is better. but if you want a good all around size go with 31's. I cant help with which A/T tire is best cause i have never owned a pair.
