Default Parking Brake stuck engaged. Help replacing broken spring

2000 Ford Ranger XLT 5speed

After it rained a few days a week back I parked my truck for 3 days because the check engine light was on and I couldn't take it to a shop in that time. On the 4th day I hopped in to take it to a garage and the parking brake was stuck engaged. Couldn't move forward or backwards, the Ebrake mechanism by my foot was working correctly and I checked the cable, it wasn't slack nor rusted.

Got the truck up on two jack stands and took off the drivers side wheel and drum, as I did a long slender spring fell out in two parts. Rusted and overly used. I went to Kragen and picked up a replacement spring that matches but to be honest I have no idea where this sucker fits together in the drum. I'm not overly mechanically inclined and don't have much experience.

I'm venturing a guess that it somehow holds the left side and right side together, because currently I can separate the two quite easily. But please tell me if I'm wrong and where this spring fits into the equation. Hell even bring my pic into photoshop and do a quick drawing overtop.

Thanks for your time.

Remove the Adjusting Screw (A), the Adjusting Cable (if it was not completely removed in step 5) (B), the Lower Spring (C), and the Adjusting Pawl and Spring (D). The Lower Spring
