Default TPMS and Powder Coating

I'm going to have my stock 2008 15" rims powder coated, but I need to take care of the TPMS first. I heard its a wire, or something like that, wrapped around the rim. Do I have to do anything special to remove it, or should I have a tire shop do it for me?

The sensors are rectangular plastic boxes about 2" x 1" x 1/2". Held onto the wheel by a metal band/strap - kind of like a long hose clamp that wraps around the diameter of the wheel.. The ends of the band are crimped - I've read that you need to cut the strap then use new straps again.

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure he is talking about the "Tire Pressure Monitoring System" = TPMS from what I've heard, the newer trucks have a sensor on each wheel that will alert you if your tire pressure is low. If that happens a light will come on on your gauge cluster, and won't go off until you put the right amount of pressure in your tires...

Agreed! I'm sure at times it would be nice, but personally, I'm very glad I don't have it! Lol!

Unfortunately, there's too many retarded drivers on the road who don't check there tire pressures, hence the government has mandated TPMS. Since 2009 IIRC. The firestone blowout debacle comes to mind, also general fuel economy.

The sensors/bands are around the wheel underneath the tire, so you won't see them if younhave a tire on the wheel. When you first tunr on your ignition, during the lamp-check, if you see a lamp/symbol that looks like a tire cross-section with an exclamation mark, then you most likely have a TPMS.

TPMS isn't a "fancy gimmick we don't need".

TPMS alerted my dad when his tire went flat so he got his truck pulled to the side of the freeway before it was completely flat, which it did so in about 2 miles according to my dad.

Alright, so the sensors are the little black boxes and the band around the rim just holds them on. Thanks, for your help.

Yea you need to buy new bands but you can reuse the sensor. The quote I had from for a few years ago was $60 a pop for bands. They come stock on all 2008+ Rangers. I personally opted to deal with a cluster light and pocket the $240+ it'll cost to get the system back up and running.

If anyone ever seen any of my vehicles with a check light on I'd never hear the end of it.

there are aftermarket bands now, they are basically huge hose clamps. im assuming that you can get some pretty cheap bands by now seeing as how ford has had that style of sensor for like 5-6 years
