2008 Ranger, extended cab, 3.0L engine. My Ranger has only 15,500kms and I've owned it since new.

On July 15 a tire pressure sensor warning light activated and my mechanic feels the sensor needs replacing.

What would be the impact of ignoring the light, after all, in 50 plus years of driving I've never had a gadget tell me to check tire pressure.

It would cost me at least $100 (the deductible) which seems like a waste of money - UNLESS there's a downside somewhere.

I'd sure appreciate any guidance on this.

Not sure about an original tire pressure warning system in your truck ,
But in the states, we can purchase an aftermarket tire pressure warning system installed
for about $200-350, and if one of the sensors inside the tire go bad, a malfunction reading would register on the aftermarket gauge, but you don't HAVE to replace it if you you dont want to.

An honest auto mechanic should give you the right answer as well,

Ya you dont have to replace the sensor if you dont want to.
Just the light will remain on for ever.

This may have been done/considered but it may be worth resetting the sensors to see if the warning comes back. Is it a specific wheel/sensor that is the problem? Does the TPMS warning set a OBD DTC that tells you which wheel?

Back to your question, my brother drives all winter with the TPMS warning lit as his winter wheels dont have the sensors. I couldnt stand driving with a warning lamp lit so I acquired winter wheels with the sensors. Other options would be to tape over the lamp or even remove it.

I also check my tire pressures every other week or so. One advantage of the TPMS would be on long trips, if I had a slow leak from a nail or something like that, may warn me before it gets worse.

My question is this; Did you check all 4 tires for correct pressure when the warning light illuminated? I have an 08 FX4 with the factory low pressure warning system installed. I had the light come on one time and checked pressures. Sure enough, 1 tire was in fact low and when I aired it up the light went out. I had the same tire get low again two weeks later and once again the light came on. Turns out there was a mesquite thorn in the tread area causing an extremely slow leak. The system does work well.

I hate that system.... I have aftermarket wheels (therefore no sensors) and I just deal with the light on all the time... it's been almost 3 years now :-)

Apparently the Ford system is different than the Honda one. If a sensor goes bad on a Honda, the traction control is disabled as well as a light on the dash being on.

I'm still learning about this system since this is my first vehicle to have it.

I run fog lights on all the time so since that light is right next to the TPMS light I don't notice.

Thanks - my mechanic did a full diagnostic for free as he thought the warranty would cover a faulty sensor. My warranty has a $100 deductible and I'd rather keep the cash!

My inlaws had that on their vehicle. They just put a piece of tape on the dash covering over the light. Never noticed it. They did have a black background however so it was easier to hide.
