Default 4.11- Stock wheels vs. 33's

So according to the gear size/tire chart, I would be getting better gas mileage on my truck with 33's on it rather than the stock 245's. Just curious how that works exactly? My gears are 4.11. Logically, it seems the much heavier tire would just automatically decrease mpg. Any explanations?

----------

and I know the whole equation of RPM = (MPH x gear ratio x 336) divided by the tire diameter. So you run a lower rpm with bigger tires for a certain speed. I was just curious why it is that this works despite the increase it tire weight?

I figured that much. It just seems like the extra weight of the tire would throw that off

This is like mine, except with 3.73s, i have about 30's on the truck now, and yes, i get better mileage now than when i had stock 225's. The thing is, the added weight of the tire isnt an issue when you get it moving, but from a stop, its more noticeable. If your in alot of stop and go traffic, your fuel mileage would be about the same being that it requires more effort off the line to get your truck moving (but having the 4.0, thats not really a problem), but for mainly highway driving, your fuel mileage will increase, being that the tire is already rotating and only needs little effort to rotate faster,

Or some bs like that. lol

Bigger tires will drop your rpms quite a bit, throw off your speedo pretty good to.

Old tires (225/75R15)
RPM - 3000
MPH on Dash - 75
Actual Speed - Abt 75

New tires (255/70R16)
RPM - 2500
MPH on Dash - 60-65
Actual Speed - 72-75

On road trips i get like 24 mpg w/ ac, not bad for a truck with bugger than stock tires.

mine went down a lot, there is a lot of resistance to moving cause of all of the extra mass, on the highway its not too bad, but you have to think, if your going to be doing a lot of stop and go it makes your motor work a lot harder to get up to speed. if youre going to be mostly on the freeway you will be fine, in town, my mileage went through the floor...

I have the ultra gauge calibrated to the tire size, so that always shows the correct mph.

only thing i can figure is that once you're up to speed, you can carry momentum easier with the larger tires. i know that's true on mountain bikes with the difference between 26" and 29ers

When I went from the factory sized tires to my 265s, I lost about .5mpg city, but I picked it back up on the highway. It balances, but for city driving, you could always get a set of low resistance street tires and a set of gnarly mudders for play.

When i went from the stock size(i don't remember the size but i know they where 14in wheels) i got about the same MPG but a noticeable difference from a stop. but its all about the Gear ratio. image riding a bike for a long distance, lets say you are taking a 10 mile ride on a flat trail. Would you rather have a bike with 20in tires or 26in tires? car tires work the same way yes the 26in tire would take more torque to get it moving but once it is up to speed it takes less HP to keep it moving so in turns lowers the RPMs(Times you have to spin the pedal) , and on the 20in tire bike it would take less torque to get it moving because it is closer to a 1:1 ratio but to keep it up to speed it takes more HP meaning it would raise the RPMs. i hope this made sense i have never really had to explain this with out a visual before. lol o yea and about the weight thing the difference in weight, especially if you are upgrading from the factory wheels because those wheels weigh so much that a set of after market wheel and even 5inch bigger A/T, not most M/T,will weigh less than the stockers.

Great example with the bike sppon896, that makes a lot of sense. Thanks everybody for the replies, I just wanted to see what people thought on the matter. The input is much appreciated from everyone!

-HazardousRanger, my bad on the title it was a classic case of typing without thinking haha. I have been slacking on all of my photo updates, but I can get a night pic with the lights as soon as possible. I will let you know when I get them up.
