Default Wheel and tire clearance issues?

1987 Ford Ranger 2wd. Lowered and seriously stiffened. Want to put the biggest 17x8 wheels and tires on that I can. What sizes will fit best without rubbing? I have an idea that a 17x8 or 8.5 with a 255/45/17 would fit, but I don't want to start ordering stuff without the brain trust here giving me some words of wisdom. Thinking about those 1993 Mustang Cobra Turbine wheels in a 5 on 4.5. Like the retro look. Not a big chrome guy. Want to fit massive brakes later so I need the 17's for clearance. Subtle...very subtle.
1987 Ford Ranger 2WD. Standard Cab / Shorty
V6 / 5 speed none of which is long for this world. V8 with Tremec over the winter. Lowered, Bilsteins, sway bars. 8.8 Rear L.S. rear end w/discs. Blue / Blue.
