Black American Eagle 117
Does anyone here have a set of American Eagle 117 painted black? i am thinking of painting my wheels black because the chrome is very oxidized and i have spent hours cleaning and steel wooling them and now i just have clean crappy looking wheels, plus i have never been a big fan of chrome, but i dont want to paint them just to find out they look terrible. <-- this is about half way through cleaning(3ish hours of never dull and steel wool.
Thanks for the advice!

Re: Black American Eagle 117
Before you get to painting them, take a Mothers Powerball to them with a metal polish and see what happens. It's amazing what the Powerblall can do versus hand polishing, due to the speed that it's rotating.

Re: Black American Eagle 117
you need to POLISH THEM after you do all that:
make sure you use chrome polish. I just polished all of my aluminum wheels myself.
Before:
AFTER:
First take them off the truck, they are easier to work on. Then take and clean them front and back with Simple Green. Then take the FINE steel wool to them. Then take the Meguiar's polishing cone to them with Chrome polish. Then wipe off stuff with a towel, buff with clean towel.

Re: Black American Eagle 117
Glad you tried the powerball before painting, those look alot better. Good chrome paint is hard to find. Most chrome paint you find (at least in rattle cans) is going to look like a dull silver.

Re: Black American Eagle 117
Yeah those look alot better. try wetsanding and polishing them. Also take some simple green and a brush to those tires! A clean and polished rim should look like this when you are done:
Also make sure you Simple Green and scrub the back of the rim and tire too!

Re: Black American Eagle 117
Ok so after about an hour per wheel i have them shining again but I still have more work to do on them because they still are pretty clouded but good enough for now. now i need to know what i should use to protect all the work I did to them, wax? if so what wax should i use. I cleaned two wheels last night and drive around with them to day and noticed that the never dull that picked up dust really bad.

Re: Black American Eagle 117
I use 2 of the 3 step process from Mothers - first their pre-clean wax, which will take off even more oxidation than you already have, and then their sealer and glaze. One of the problems with un-coated wheels is that you have to keep up with cleaning them.
My wheels look about 10x worse than Scott's did (no lie), so I'm going to have a hell of a time cleaning them up this weekend. We had a bad winter, so the rims were getting dirt and salt packed onto them every day. Salt etches the grains on the surface metal of aluminum... not too good when your rims are made of the material.
