Post Thoughts on snow tires

I have a Ranger XLT 2.3 auto and i have trouble getting around in the winter time. Ive tried sand bags and all season tires. Does anyone have thoughts on snow tires? I'm thinking about buying a set for next season sometime after summer. Any suggestions would be great.

usually you can get a good deal on them in the spring, and they do great on ice and light snow, better than anything else, some are supposed to be better than even studded tires too.

yeah always, especially since if you get stuck you can pour the sand on the road to help with traction.

Yeah weight in the back will still offer a huge advantage over no weight. I'm running Bridgestone Blizzak DMV-1's and I'm very happy with them. You should be able to pick up top end snows for a very good price. I bought mine on tire rack.

2-3 i would keep a few hundred pounds in it, it will help a lot, when i lived in the snow i kept some sand bags and a tool bag in the back for weight, it makes a big difference.

The Kelly Wintermark Snow tires I have on my CR-V have been great, especially if you are looking for a mud tire look. The howl from the tread design can be annoying for some though. They are pretty cheap too, I paid something like $450 for five 215/75R15 tires.

So far i am in love with my tires. They perform great in snow, and when i want to have fun, i turn off all the assists and they still give me good control. I would not invest in dedicated winter tires for a truck.

Mind you, i haven't put in weight in the bed.

For those who would not invest in dedicated winter tires....either you have 4X4 or you live in a warmer climate! I have the same truck 2X4, 2.3, 5 speed. I put an aggressive winter ICE/SNOW (similar to blizzak) all around and have three totes at the tailgate with bags of salt and snow inside to the tune of 300 pounds. The truck will go in anything this winter has thrown at me and it turns and stops extremely well. Having the bags of salt and sand in totes keeps any overflow out of the bed. I have all three totes attached to the rear cargo hooks so they can't shift and all are under my "Bakflip" cover.

get bfg ats for a truck, they are classified as all season but there is a little snow flake on em which means they are a winter tire, we just put 4 on my dads f150 and it made a huge difference over his goodyears, you can go places in 2wd that you had to use 4wd to go before

I'm your neighbor from the east, we have the same weather

I've been told by a couple ppl that i would need weight in the back, but my thread pattern is great for winter (pics in my profile). Mine aren't 4 season tires though, they have the snowflake in a mountain emblem which makes them legal to drive in winter.

Something to keep in mind is the different (softer) tread compound that dedicated winter tires have. And siping.

No All season tire will stop as well in the winter as a dedicated winter tire, And that by itself is worth it, Not just the superior traction.

For a very good and not too expensive Winter tire, Look up the General Altimax Arctic.
It's a Northern European design. (Gislaved)
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....Altimax+Arctic

They are studdable as well, If your driving conditions require that.
