Default 31" tires with 3.27 gears

Hi

I am planning on getting new tires for my 1995 ranger XLT 4x4 and am trying to decide between the 31x10.5x15 or 30x9.5x15. I have read that the 31" should fit fine but my only concern is will the increased diameter effect the overall performance and gas mileage. I would like the 31" tires for the extra ground clearance and for looks, but i may be doing some towing (nothing to big) and dont want to give up to much towing performance.

My ranger has axle code 91 so it has the 3.27 gears and the current tire size is 235/75/15.

Basically just looking for someone who has this tire and gear setup and what their opinion is about it.

Thanks!

Thats a little steep for 31's I think, I have stock 235's with 3.55 gears and tho it is fine it is sluggish on the low end. I am working on putting in 3.73 with the L/S. I'll have set of 3.55's if interested....?

I have 31s and 3.27s. It isnt that bad.

What are you towing? If it isnt a huge trailer you should be alright.

Pooleo: Yea i dont want to get into a situation where its annoyingly sluggish. I think im going to use the gears that are currently there now, but ill keep in mind that you have 3.55 in case i change my mind!

WearyTraveler: The most i will be towing is probably a seadoo or quad in a utility trailer. Is yours automatic or manual? If manual do you have to bring the rpm's up more when you shift?

Thanks for the input!

ya know just take a look at a gear chart. Remember those ratios are considering a 1:1 at trans, in 5th its .79 or.84...? anyhow just look for your stock size look at rpm go down to new tire size and look at rpm. go over till you get close to stock rpm.

----------

my dad went from 205 to 235 and cant run 5th gear, motor lugs to much, but he has a 4 popper and cant get the torque to maintain such a low rpm.

Mine is an auto. So not really too helpful for that.
