Default Change wheels and tires for better....

Change 'em for Performance and gas milage.

currently have primewell pa100 265/75/16 (31.7 inch talland these tires have a poor rolling resistance and are just el cheapos) and stock 16x7s
so the tires weight is 45 lbs but i need to know the wheel weight.

now to improve acceleration and gas milage.
switching to 15/8 rim and 31/10.5/15 tires bfg t/a ko's (30.7 to be exact) they have better rolling resistance so should help in gas milage.

tire weight is 42lbs for the bfg's. now if i go with crager soft 8s it will weight 28lbs or if i go aluminum wheels will be 20lbs.
so if the stockers are 30lbs then i can have 20-52lbs less of unsprung mass or the equivelant of removing 200-520lbs of weight (depends on conversion, i have heard 20:1 down to 2:1 i'll use 10:1)

so anyone know the wheel weight of fords 16x7 stock wheels? can't find it anywhere

Just did some math...
change in diameter will result in, from 265/75/16 to 31x10.5x15, the 31 to travel ~160 feet less in the same revolutions it takes the 265 to do a mile.

so 3% (160/5280*100) less strain on the drivetrain and lets say the rims are 25lbs and tires 45lbs on there currently and if i got tko's (42lbs) and classic II wheels (17lbs) weight savings would be 44lbs (1.1% less strain before unsprung conversion) even at 4:1 ration it's 4.5% increase ((44*4)/3876*100).

Theoretically the change (7.5% increase) would take a current best 0-60 time of 9.375 down to 8.672 (9.375*.925) and gas milage, from best of 17, up to 18.275 (17*107.5).

Hmm that sounds like where my truck should be at

You wanna do my Algebra II homework for me? LOL.

Anyway, let me see if i understand this, your putting a smaller? tire on your truck in hopes of better performance and/or mpg, and the math posted above should be the reasoning behind how it works?

The one thing you are not taking into consideration is your RPM's. With a smaller diameter tire your RPM's will go up.

A 3.0 likes higher rpms better than a 4.0. Probably due to the volumetric effeciency designed into the motor as well as cam profile... It sound good on paper if you have a 3.0. It could backfire on you with a 4.0, they have a broader torque brand.

the truck was designed to run with 31x10.5x15 or 245/75/16, because 4.0l and 4.10, those tires are the most efficent sizes it can run with. The 44lbs less rotating mass will increase acceleration and because the tire is more rigid its rolling resistance is less so gas milage will go up.

and ready for this the size change from 31.7(requires more force to tun) to 30.7(less required) will make a differance in gas milage alone. lets say to go 10mph it takes 2.0hp with 30.7 and then with 31.7 it takes 2.06.hp Now this is minimal, but everytime you double the velocity, you quadrouple the force required so.

mph 30.7 31.7
10 2.0 2.06
20 8.0 8.24
40 32.0 34.24
80 128.0 131.84
160 512.0 527.36

so as you see with just tire size changeit will require less power needed to keep going so = better mpgs and acceleration at higher speeds.

with weight change this will be greater.

p.s. i can feel a big difference from my truck to my freinds tuck. getting to around f40mph feels the same but at 55mph or more it feels like i have less power. so there lol

----------

as bonus weight change added

mph 30.7 31.7
10 2 2.15
20 8 8.6
40 32 34.4
80 128 137.6
160 512 550.4

at 80mph it's like 10 more hp... hmmm i think there could be a difference or as with 30.7 if you have exactly 200hp so with 31.7 it's like you have 185 hp total....

remember these numbers are not 100% correct and are for demostartional puposes.

You need to be a math major if you are doing this kind of stuff for fun.

I'll gladly take the stock wheels off your hands so you can transfer these equations to your truck.
