I have Cooper Weathermasters..they work fine too. The original posting didn't mention if 2 sets of wheels are being used. Winter rims (steel) and tires are the way to go. Save the mags for the warmer times..winter will ruin them especially if they use road salt where you live. A lot of people buy ugly winter rims....cheap looking and generic..you can get ones that look great. eg:Soft 8...steel made by several companies. I have Keystone Soft 8's.
The Coopers are about half the price of the Goodyears my Edge came with and work better in the snow.

I got the warranty they offer because I only have 9k miles on my truck, so I probably have the tires for 7 seasons at least.
You should do well since you can use studs. I can't..they aren't legal here. Studs make tire choice less important.

I'm going to +1 on the Hankook iPikes. I had them on my B2200 and never got stuck or felt like I would slide around (didn't have any weight in the bed either). I have another set on my 2001 Ranger for this winter too.

I'll find out tomorrow if they found me some Artic Claw Xsi winter tires. Very reasonably priced winter treads... few, but good reviews. *fingers crossed*

Here are ratings on winter tires from PMC Tire in Quebec (all pages are in French though):

http://www.leprodupneu.com/pneu-hive...ttes-vus-2010/

http://www.leprodupneu.com/pneu-hive...ver-auto-2010/

SkyYYZ,

I have had studded Arctic Claw TXI on my Mazda RWD truck....they are entry level winter tires IMO. Since the Mazda is an older truck, I didn't want to spend much $$$ on winter tires....a set of studded 205/75-14 TXI was just over $500 (with my own steel rims). They performed good, but were somewhat noisy with the studs. My studded General Altimax Arctic are quieter.

Tirerack.com did some real world testing on several studdable winter tires (General Altimax Arctic, Firestone Winterforce and Pirelli Winter Carving Edge)...General Altimax Arctic were top rated. In Nov 2009, Consumer Reports had the General Altimax Arctic rated #2 behind Michelin XIce Xi2. IMO, the General Altimax Arctic provided excellent bang for the buck.

Hey David:

Okay thanks... good to get feedback from someone who is using them. I'm not looking to spend a lot of money as I've already forked out a lot buying a new truck. The guys here on FRF mentioned the stock Wrangers are crap in the snow when I asked, so I came across these budget tires which got some good reviews online. I'm guessing they can't find me any since I have yet to hear back, so I might have to get name brand after all...

So, I get the tires put on, drive ~ 140 miles to the ski area...roads are clear. While in the parking lot someone smashes into the back right rear of my ranger and DOESN'T leave a note. Fortunately a Good Samaritan witnesses it and gives me the information. I call the police, they come out to take a report, and while this is going on, my brother looks around for the vehicle given in the description and FINDS it a few rows over. See, it was a pay lot and this dingbat was too cheap to go park elsewhere. Police identify the damage and match up parts that were left behind, THEN they start to pull the guys vehicle onto a flat bed...just as he arrives. He gets all upset that his 'ride' is being towed, and then admits to everything. They hit him with a 24 point ticket!
My truck has ~ $2k worth of damage, he hit it so hard it shifted the bed over about an inch.
Fortunately he was insured and I have been driving a GMC Canyon 4x4 rental....which I have to say has nice power for a 5 banger.

So, I have not had a chance to see if the tires are any good on snow / ice yet! Ill let you know.

These are the TXI...a different tread from the XSI:

http://www.gobigo.ca/tires_cord_arctic_claw_TXI.php

What size are looking at? A local Honda dealer has been advertising Firestone Winterforce 245/75-16 for $119.95. About a year ago, I had ordered my General Altimax Arctics from Talon Tire in Quebec ($664 to my door). A local tire dealer mounted, studded, and balanced them for ~$180 with taxes (rims were bought separately).

There are a number of good tire dealers in the GTA including Simply Tire and Tires23.

Hey Dave:

255/70-16's. Thanks for the info. I just got of the phone and there are none left to be had from his supplier(s) so I missed that boat. I'm dealing with a small but exclusive tire place that my employer uses so I'll give them another day to find me something... we get 90-day accounts through them so it makes it less painful to part with the cash all at once this time of year. He said call back tomorrow morning. I'll give him another day to find me something before I break out the credit card and go somewhere else

My stock tire size is also 255/70-16. You can use alternate tire sizes such as 245/75-16 (1.4% larger) or 235/75-16 (0.6% smaller)....245/75-16 are much more readily available in both P-rated and LT-rated.

Since you are close to the US border, you might want to consider ordering tires from a US tire retailer and shipping them to Buffalo for installation. Tires are so much cheaper in the US than Canada.

Do the 245/75-16's affect the speedometer out of curiosity?

Speedo will read about 1.4% too slow. For example, 100 kph with stock tires will read 98.6 kph with 245/75-16.
