Default 205/215/225/235/31/33/265???what??

I know that the 1st number on a tire is the size (height), but what is the order it goes in? I've heard of everything from a p185 to a 285, but where does like the 31" and stuff come in?

I wanna get max tires on my 99 2wd. the sticky says i can go with 215, 225, then it jumps up to like 30 and 31"

Can someone clear this up for me?

lets say a 275/40/17.

the first number is the width of the tread in MM.
the second is the aspect ratio of the side wall (to tread i think).
and the last is what size wheel it fits on.

if you are talking a 33, or 37, that is the overall diameter of the tire.

You might what to play with this application too to figure out what you want. It's a great tool to figure out tire sizes fit what and other things.

Miata tire size calculator

For example my stock tire size is 225/70R14. There isn't much out there in that size. If I don't want to throw my speedometer and odometer off, I can use 205/70R15 and have much more tire selection. The above link helped me figure that out.
