Actual winter tires or just really good tires in the snow like all terrains or something?

Ive never understood the concept of buying "winter" tires. Why not just buy a good All Terrain like a BGF All Terrain and be done with buying "Winter Tires". One set and you are good to go. BFGs do great in the snoe and have great road manners and last FOREVER! you will pay for them, but you are getting a quality product. I paid $633 our the door for my 31x10.50s at a local shop. GO with these and you will not be let down.

Now I understand I live south of the Mason Dixon Line, and do not get snow all winter like northern states and Canada does, but it does not make any sense to me to buy one set of tires for the winter and set for the rest of the months. Just buy one set that handles it all and you're good to go!

Dixie. You hav 4wd he has 1wd. Snow tires are perfect for his truck in the winter.

On my 09 XL I ran Bridgestone Blizzacks.. An awesome winter tire.

that is true, but I ran all terrains on my 2WD and they worked great even though it was 2wd:

i guess a snow tire would be better for him though, i know if it were me, i wouldn't to have to buy two sets of tires

Some places in Canada require actual winter tires and for us northern boys, there really is no substitute even if you have 4X4.

Since my Ranger is my second vehicle, when the snow flies, the CR-V with winter tires will be the only one on the road. Those winter tires have saved my bacon a few times when most everyone else was on the side of the road after losing control.

ATs and MTs are OKAY but don't perform to the level a winter tire does.

See that is where im lost, we get snow like two or three times a winter, not all winter so we dont have to have snow tires...lol

I guess I understand now lol

Go with Bridgestone Blizzak DM-V1s. I very rarely have to use 4x4 in the winter since I bought these. I run them on my stock rims so my nice ones don't get ruined (Stewie?). I've sworn by Blizzaks since I put them on my '93 Probe GT in '98.

Been there, done that. In snow belt regions, the BFG AT T/A KO, while having the mountain snowflake, do NOT perform great. Had them on my 4x2 Mazda with several hundred pounds of sand in the back....still got stuck 10 times one winter. After a couple of winters, I upgraded to a set of studded Arctic Claw TXI....noticeably better than the BFG in winter conditions. Average annual snow fall in my region is 92 inches (2.34 metres).

Just installed a set of studded General Altimax Arctic winter tires on my FX4. For a studless winter tire, I would look at either the Continental Extreme Winter Contact or possibly the Blizzak DMV1.

Snow tires tend to be a softer rubber to help with traction; because of this they will tend to wear faster. So in Colorado, I run two sets of rims/tires; a summer and a winter. My winter tire up to now has been the Cooper M/S and has been alright, although I have had to chain up quite a few times. This year I have been asking aroung at the tire shops and I have been given two recommendations: the Eldorado Trailcutter R/T and have them siped or the Firestone Winterforce. We don't have snow stay on the roads long enough to justify studding so I am looking for the best traction I can get and just carry a set of chains around.
