We would get notices from tire mfgs all the time advising us to air up to max or close to it as called for on the particular tire. Remember the Explorer/ Firestone fiasco?

3 things happen when you run um low; cupping(noisy tires), accelerated wear, lower mileage. There is a bit of softer ride also, but mine ain't a caddi.
I agree, I go with the recommendations of what it reads on the sidewalls of my tires. I put the max pressure allowed in my 33's and don't notice a difference. I also have a Hyundai tucson which is my commuter, I had a company do the balancing rotating and filling, BUT the dumb asses went by what the door sticker said, when they are not factory tires. That caused the wheels to cup and the tires had a 50k warranty on them and they only lasted 35k and they wouldn't cover the remaining warranty because the tires showed they were run on a lower air pressure that what they should have been.

The pressure listed on the door jam is for any tires (original and aftermarket) of the 'same' size. Ford engineers came up with this pressure calculation based on ride quality, wear, acceleration and specifically, braking characteristics.
Once tires heat up (after about 3-4 miles of riding), inside pressure increases by about 2-4 pounds, so if your run 44 pounds of pressure, they are now at 47. Tires should be a working part of your suspension, helping to absorve some of the bumps. Several things can happen when you ride with high pressures: In an emergency situation, your car will not brake as designed, taking longer to stop; eventually the excess wear and tear in your suspension components with tend to deteriorate them faster: tires will wear more in the center as you are creating less of a footprint on the road; tires will not have the same grip on sharper turns. In addition the ride will be a lot stiffer. (If you don't believe this, take them down to 26 pounds and ride the truck, then compare the same ride at 44 pounds in the same stretch of road).
Sorry, but I stick to the manufacturer recommendation, they know better than me. If I get 40,000 to 50,000 miles out of a set of tires, I'm a happy camper. That is what I have been getting as an average on a set of tires in the last 25 years.

Any time you change tire manufacturers, it's a roll of the dice. The OEM recommendation may work, maybe not. If nothing else. it gives a good starting point though. Keep an eye on your tread and adjust as needed.

Thanks for the information from everyone. I will be increasing the tire pressure from 35 psi to 44 psi during my next trip to the gas station. Will drive it around for a few weeks and see how it rides and handle. If the ride and handling stays about the same, then I will leave it at 44 psi. Tires with higher psi tend to run cooler. If you ever have a tire with really low pressure feel the sidewall and it will be warmer than the other tires.

Most of the time, I carry about 200 lbs of salt in the back for traction during winter. Hopefully that will be enough weight to keep the rear wheels going in snow this winter. The tires on my truck have lasted much longer than I expected; in excess of 50k miles.

35 psi: been that way for my tires since 2005 and they are wearing evenly.

For those of you saying you use the "Recommended" pressure printed on the tire, read a bit more closely and you will see it says "Maximum Recommended". That is the absolute max pressure and that should only be used when the truck is fully loaded or hauling a trailer, not bumping around town with a gallon of milk in the passenger seat.

I run what is printed in the door jam, unless I have a load in the back.
