Not so stupid a question. I've run across vehicles where the wheel design does matter.
An example would be the 1997 - 2001 Honda CR-V. The brake calipers are rather large and the wheel will hit the caliper on a lot of non-stock rims unless you install a spacer (bad idea) or grind the caliper down some. Even with rims that do fit, including stock ones, there is damn little clearance between the caliper and the rim.
Now, concerning the Ranger, you might be having the same issue. I don't know from personal experience since I have a much older model.
