TPMS - What to do ?

Hi,
I will be getting a new set of tires and mags for winter and I was wondering, do I absolutely need to get (4) new TPMS monitors, and can I just jump the connection or something not to see the light ? I know it is mandatory now but if I can save 150$ I prefer doing that.

You should be able to swap the bands over to the new wheels

Why is it mandatory?

Actually, I read further more, and here in Canada it's not yet a law. STL, to answer your question, I do not want to remove the originals. If anything, I would get another set, but there's gotta be a way to jump this and making it think that everything is ok, or just unplugging a fuse.

Based on a quote from my local Ford dealer, I would need to pay $440 for a set of TPMS sensors and bands for my Ranger. Screw that. I will either put up with the annoying light or use black tape to cover it up.

Based on what I have read, you cannot jump the connection....you would need to take out that particular light bulb (not worth the effort IMO).

Or buy the new sensors on eBay for 25.00 each & new bands from discount tire for 6.00 each. Rather than paying stealership prices.

Or the cheapest way. Take origonal sensors off stock rims. Insert all 4 sensors in a piece of PVC pipe. Cap & seal both ends. Drill one end to be fitted with a valve stem. Pressurize the tube to 40 psi. Put tube under your seat, or strap it to the frame rail, or in the engine bay. (doesn't really matter where in the truck) & then you can change tires & wheels at your will & not worry about TPMS again

put the 4 tires in the bed of the truck...keeps tpms close, and added weight for the snow...lol can't get any cheaper than that haha

It's mandatory for manufacturers as of 2008. I don't think it's tied to emissions regulations. Very doubtful since it's a safety feature.

That's brilliant! LOL. I was wondering how off roading mods were handled.

I still wonder if there is a way to reprogram the pcm to not expect any signal though.

that wouldn't be a bad idea but it kind of defies the purpose of having a pick up lol

As far as I know there's no way to bypass the system. You only need to buy new bands (I was quoted $60 each about 2 years ago) and the old sensors can be removed off of the old bands and installed on the new ones. I took mine off 2 years ago and have been rolling like that ever since (flashing light in cluster and all). I had the tire shop mount tires on wheels but since they never installed said wheels on the truck they didn't break any laws.

From what I've heard the only thing you can do is disassemble the cluster and put a piece of black tape on the bulb... I'm sure there are more options but I left it alone since you get used to it after awhile... especially since I drive with my fogs on and that light is right next door to the TPMS light.

Unless they've changed the system this won't work. The sensors have some sort of movement part to them I think... not sure how it works but I know with my stock sensors in my bed at first the truck thought everything was good but about 30-45 minutes later the TPMS light came on. Tested this theory about 3 times and every time the TPMS tripped even with the sensors on board.

It has worked in my Mustang for 4 years.

After the sensors are put in new tires or a PVC pipe. They have to be reprogramed.

Like I said... my sensors were un-touched still on the stock wheels and that didn't work... no idea what the deal was but I tried it a few times.

& the stock tires were put in the bed for this test?
