Hi everyone, first post here.

I recently purchased a 2010 Ranger FX4 (Canada) that’s running the 255/70R16 All-terrain tires. Since I live in a city with terrible snow management in winter and I head up to the mountains regularly, I like to run winter tires, even on a truck.

I have some great studded winter tires from an Escape I owned that have only seen one season, and wouldn’t mind using them. I understand the benefits of using a narrower tire in winter, so this is attractive to me.

However, the diameter difference is substantial. The Escape tires are 235/70R16 versus the 255/70R16 I’m running on the Ranger now.

Am I going to be getting into any trouble by running these? Keep in mind in Canada the FX4 runs 4.10 gears… that’s a pretty tiny tire for the 4.10 no?

There is also a difference in load capacity… the Escape tires are 106 and the Ranger currently is running 109.

I may end up ordering new tires with some alloys if this is going to be too much of a mess to put together.

Barring the load limit difference, you could run with them though with the smaller diameter, your speedometer will read fast by about 3.7% which translates to about 5 mph or there about. So if you are traveling at an indicated 55 mph, you would actually be traveling at about 50 mph.

I'm ok with the speedo difference, just concerned about running the small tire on 4.10s more than anything. Am I going to be spinning the tires because of the added torque more than just running the A/T tires in snow? That's my struggle. And fuel econ?

Regarding the load difference... the 106's are rated 2094lbs. Can I multiply that by 4 and if greater than loaded weight I'm safe? Or is there more to it?

You should be fine with the driving, with 4.10s, you'll just have to go easy no matter what size you use.

The weight rating of a tire is dependant on the pressure in the tire. The max load is at the max psi.

Even though this is a different brand, this tire inflation table should get you in the ball park. I had to use it for my CR-V when I installed truck tires on it so I could get the load rating and tread wear right. It helped me a LOT!
