Default Pressure sensor issue when swapping wheels.

Hey I drive a 2008 4x2 reg cab Ranger
So I went over to Ford Service to get a price on mounting my new wheels, and they told me I would need to pay for new sensor straps. roughly $60 per wheel. ON TOP of paying $25 a wheel for mounting and balancing.
Is that BS?
So I went to a local shop and they told me $40 (per wheel) flat rate for everything, and that they would try to save the straps. But they also run the risk of not being able to re-program the sensors and then I would have to bring it back to Ford..

I'm looking for some advice on the best/cheapest way to go..
Thanks!

Are you keeping the old wheels or getting rid of them?

It sounds to me that the straps are pretty much a one time install. The tire shop will try to reuse them and the dealership won't even bother.

I'm not sure what they are driving at with reprograming the sensors. If it's the same ones, they shouldn't need reprogramed unless I'm missing something.

I am pretty sure the TPMS band is just like a huge hose clamp. Can be used more then once.

I'm getting new wheels and tire for my truck. I want to keep the factory wheels and tires as my winter set. Does anyone know where to get another set of tpms wheel sensors from and how much it cost?

Here in Canada, a local Ford dealer want $100 per tire for the TPMS sensors. I went without the TPMS sensors on my winter wheels (black steelies)....have to put with the inflation tire symbol on the dash either flashing/on....no big deal.

the oem strap is a one time use non-adjustable band clamp

the replacement is a giant hose clamp. They can be bought at most tire retailers for around 20 a piece and you cut off the access, and it can be reused.

If done properly (i.e. left front sensor installed on left front rim) NO reprogram is necessary. But if they start putting them in new positions, it could cause the light to come on.

I would check with bigger chain tire stores, they are usually the ones that have the most experience with TPMS

+1 on that I'm running 16x7 99 Ranger Alloy's without sensors and the light flashes a few times then goes solid.

The light annoys me a bit because I prefer when every light on the dash actually means something and every time I notice it I remember it's a dumb system made in response to tires exploding when people were too stupid to check there tire pressure. There is "NO CURE FOR STUPID" not even technology. I wouldn't mind it... actually I'd like it if they at least would let me read the tire pressure from each tire like the GM system does.

If I take apart the dash at all in the future the bulb for that indicator will disappear

Unsure but I've never heard that the system does anything other than blink the light... I've been running mine without sensors since early Nov and there is no codes when I run an ODB2 scan.

Awhile ago, somebody mentioned that the bands are ~$6 each from Discount Tire.

Been running fine without TPMS sensors since mid October 2010. I have left my TPMS-sensored wheels in the garage which usually fools the truck (when parked) in thinking that the TPMS system is working....and the icon goes away for awhile (checks tires every 15 miles or 25 km?).

yes!! ^^^ this statement is completely 100% correct.

the bands are re-useable, as long as you're staying within the same wheel size (roughly) bc the bands are adjustable.

you can also just scrap the whole system all together, as its not a necessity. you'll just have a dummy light illuminated on the dash. if you choose this route, be sure to hang on to all the sensors in the event that you decide to go back to using them.

the TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) is far from the same setup as it is on our trucks. The toyota TPMS device is part of the valve stem, whereas on a ford its attached to the wheel via a band that is very similar to a hose clamp. Apples and Oranges, my friend.
