Default larger tires / factory wheels

Going tomorrow to crank up the torsion bars, just to level out the truck. Want to put on lift, but not for a while. Right now, after leveling truck, want to get some new tires (if possible, bigger size). I have the factory tires and wheels, and would just as soon keep the wheels and get bigger tires. I looked at the max tire size post, but it only covers up to 2008 models. Have a 2010 Sport 4x4, with factory wheels and tires (255/70r16).

Has anyone put bigger tires, or off-road tires on these factory wheels? If so, pics would be awesome. Not looking for huge look, just more aggressive appearance. Still want to install a lift in a few months, but unless I upgrade tires, lift will look silly. Trying to do one thing at a time, so will level torsion bars, get bigger tires, and if need be, install lift.

Any info/advise is, as always, appreciated. Thanks!

Steve

you can get away with a 285x75x16 which essentially is almost 33" tall by 11" wide, it just depends on how big you wanna go, you can easily fit 32x11.5, but I wouldn't go much wider on a stock wheel, unless you have 16x8 wheel. If you do have a 16x8 wheel, you can go 12.5 wide on your tire

That's not true. On a 07 and earlier truck you can. But on 08's and up they sit lower than something like what my truck sits factory. For him to fit 285's he would have to do a pre-key swap with something like a shackle in the rear.

I stand corrected then. I was just going off of what is said in sticky at the top of the page for an 08 4x4 with stock suspension:

Quote:
* 16x7 stock suspension - 255x70x16, 265x70x16, 265x75x16, 285x75x16(mild t-bar crank recommended but might not be needed.)

Thanks. I know my truck sits low, especially for a 4x4. Will be going to raise front torsion to level out tomorrow. If I go with an off road tire, same size as stock, will it actually change anything about appearance of truck? Right now, tires look like straight radial, not off road at all. Would this even be a worth while purchase, or should I wait till I put on lift before I even fool with new tires?

I know, lots of questions. Please keep in mind, my only other 4x4 was a Toyota many years ago (1995), which came to me with body lift and 33x12.50's in place already. The 33x12.50's are extreme, as I am only occassional off roader (stationed in Germany, where the locals dont look too kindly on tearing up their precious wilderness), but do want something at least a bit bigger/more aggressive than what I have in place now.

Thanks,

Steve

^ Agreed. You could fit the 265's with just a torsion crank.

Pre key mod sounds easy.....just can't find the damn things LOL

I feel your pain! I have a 2010 xlt and yeah, these things are pretty low for being 4X4....

Those will fit easily without a crank imo (31.6in).

My 31s look kinda small-ish.

Went this morning and cranked up torsion bar some. Went from front end of 33 1/8" (ground highest point in wheel well) to 34", with the rear still at 34 5/8". Looks much better now, and that awkward sponginess I had in the front is gone (feels like a truck now). I am going to check what a set of 265's will run me. I can buy them fairly cheap on base, but would likely be Cooper brand then. No immediate rush though.

About to go take some pics of the truck, finally. At least looks like a truck now, just not a 4x4. Oh well, all in good time...

Make sure you go get an alignment now. Unless you don't care about your tires and plan on getting new ones soon.

Going Friday to a place off post. Want to save the tires and see if they'll fit on my wifes's Explorer (kill two birds with one stone maybe).

Finally have pictures of the truck posted (see my album). Sorry it's so dirty, but been raining here. Appreciate opinions on what to do next. Looking at the pics, looks like the torsion bar raise actually turned out pretty good. Still have the front a tiny bit lower than rear, but looks much better now.

Before anyone states the obvious, I know it looks like a two wheel drive truck. Take my word, it is 4x4. Eventually it will look the part :>)
