Was under the truck today replacing shocks and noticed that my rear tires had a bunch of wheel weights on them. The driver side rear had 18 sticky weights and 2 clip on weights, the passenger side rear had 9 sticky and 2 clip-ons.

Each sticky weight had the number 25 and a picture of a leaf on them and each clip-on weight had "Fe 20" on them.

Is this way too many? I don't think I've come across a wheel with this much weight on it, it's usually a couple of clip-ons and that's it.

That does seem like a lot....I would go and ask the place that put em on and find out why so much to balance..

It's not necessarily the wheel that is the issue, tires have slight weight imbalances, whether from a joining point of the cap plies or a slight deviation from perfectly round because that kind of perfection is impossible to achieve.

At higher speeds, a tiny imbalance in weight can easily become a large imbalance in centrifugal force, causing the wheel/tire assembly to spin with a kind of “galumphing” motion. This usually translates into a vibration in the car as well as some very irregular and damaging wear on the tires..

Same can be had for wheels where a dent or bend in a wheel can affect how the weight moves within centrifugal forces.

We cringe when we see people take the full brunt of a chuck hole by strafing it or them (multiple divots and holes) rather than straddle or avoid them.

Eh. Does the truck drive smooth? If so, who cares. Obviously it's balanced.

My 35" tires took a lot of weight to balance, but they balanced, and that's all I cared about. Rides smooth, no problem.

No, the thing shakes like crazy at around 65-75. I've been chasing it down for a while now and just assumed that, since the tires were brand new, that it couldn't be the wheels.

I was kind of wondering/looking for validation, that maybe the rim is bent and the tech was trying to counterbalance the bent rim.

Okay, what I think I'll do is just take it back to the shop and have them look it over. Maybe while I'm there I'll talk to the tech and see if there is a specific reason there is so much weight (i.e. bent rim) and go from there.

I've been chasing a rear end vibration for a while now and I just want to be able to rule out the wheels. These tires are only about a month old and were balanced and aligned at time of installation which didn't fix the vibration as I'd hoped, but it did move it's effective MPH range from around 55-65 before the new tires, to around 65-75 with these new ones.

Go get them balanced.... Shaky vehicle first thing you should do is get tires balanced. New or not.

Okay. WHile I'm there I'm going to have the guy give the whole rear end a once over, just to make sure everything is in good shape.

Looks like some crap they do at Walmart.....those idiots never heard of rotating the tires 180 degrees and rebalancing.
