Default Good year wrangler radials

The 99 I just bought had the cheapest goodyear wrangler radials that could be purchased.

Tread still looks good but the tires look 100 years old with dry rot.

The guy I bought it off of says less than 3 years ago he replaced them.

Is this because they are cheap tires or is there a neglect factor that contributed to their demise?

Would be nice to put what came off back on but if this particular tire is a problem then I would rather upgrade.

There's nothing wrong with that brand or style. They aren't cheap, they are inexpensive. If they were made in the sizes I need, I'd buy them again.
I think those tires are simply suffering from neglect/abuse.

I had decent luck with them, I put a third set on my truck a few years ago but one went out of round with about 40% tread left. I think it happened due to 3 holes and being plugged in close vicinity. I ended up replacing them with LT rated tires, not that I am putting an excessive load on the tires but I do frequent areas that aren't very tire friendly... rocks, stobs, stumps....
It seems the tires in question are about a 35,000 mile tire at best. They wore evenly on my truck and ride good and I tend to replace tires before being worn slick anyway. Most people probably would ride them longer than I do.

Thanks for the feedback, due to their "inexpensiveness" I believe they will make an appearance on the 2000 I just bought. I'm having the ones on the 99 balanced then selling the truck. Things change quickly LOL.

There's a # on the side of the tire showing when it was made. If they're 3 years old it should say something like 1114. That means it was made the 11 week of 2014.

I just bought a set of 4 Michelin XLT for $470 out the door. I got them from Costco. Costco has the best tire warranty on the planet

I saw that Walmart has the SR-A which I would rather have for not a lot more than the regular wrangler radials at my local goodyear dealer. Last time I took a car to Walmart for tires they left one lug nut off, lost it. Wouldn't pay for a replacement either. Said it was stripped and gave me the car back with 4 out of 5. I guess if you live long enough all kinds of stupid presents itself.

LOL, mallwart, the only time I'll even go into their parking lot is if I have to take a leak. Then it'll be all over the closest mallwart truck!!

Those SR/A tires are what used to come as the OEM tire on many F150's. Ya, different size, but same tire. Now those "ARE" cheap tires.

I am able to avoid Walmart because I have other options. Wal-Mart does suck. I've bought dozens of sets of tires. I never had an issue with the install.

OK I'll dig up some ratings. I could get "good" tires but frankly I have no idea what good tires are. I thought Michelins were the best till I put a pair on a fusion, ended up almost 500 for a pair and they had dry rot in 3 years.

Dry rot in 3 years, That's crazy. I've never had a dry rot issue like that. Costco would have refunded them if there was still tread on them.

x2 on looking up the date code, but tires can rot if they sit. Tires have an oil in them that gets worked through the tires when they are driven that keeps them soft/protected from UV, if let to sit, this oil doesn't get worked through and the tires dry rot. I had a set on my Jeep XJ, that sat quite a bit, and were pretty dry rotted within 3 years. Same thing happens to trailer tires.

OK that makes sense, the fusion for that 3 years got about 10 miles a week on it.

with that little of driving, I would be getting pretty cheap tires, and budgeting to replace them every few years (and hitting up for warranty replacements as well).

It seems to me Goodyear makes great tires when your willing to buy their higher end option. I had 3 Sets of Duratracs between 2 trucks and they were fantastic. My Ranger had their wrangler RT's on it when I got it. I would have rather had drag slicks in the rain over those. Worst tire I have ever had.
