Default brake booster problem

Hi everyone I was driving home yesterday and when I let off the gas and the brake booster took my brakes full on came to a stop right in trafic what a shock. I had to shut the truck off to bleed down the vacuum to get them to release. when I was driving foot on the gas all ok but all the way home soon as I released the gas brakes full on. thoughts were either the check valve or the booster itself. Has anyone else had this happened

welcome to the forum!
for those on tapatalk, OP's sig line says a 94 3.0 auto 2wd with 200k miles, new heads put on recently...
fwiw, at 200k, i'd be inclined to put a new master on for the heck of it, but either way I look forward to seeing what the issue is, sounds pretty scary best of luck!

I will let you know I figure the way the peddle went right to the floor has to be a vacuum thing I mean it sucked the peddle right to the floor quite the rush at 50 mph.

Hi first off do not drive this truck until you get it fixed.

I suspect you have vacuum getting into the wrong part of the brake booster.

which means you may want to consider replacing the booster.

I would also look into the brake fluid and make sure it is not contaminated with water.

if your system is severely neglected and has a lot of water in it heat could boil the water causing pressure on the brake lines ( yet this should not move the brake pedal I wouldn't think )

i've been trying to think on how the vacuum is sucking it in so much. i think kevin is right, a new booster and fresh fluid.... and then a master if you have the time lol! save you some time if it goes bad as well in the future. i hate brake problems, so i tend to go apeshit on them

The brake pedal isn't going to travel to the floor as a consequence of a failed PB booster. We know this to be correct not only because of what the function of the PB booster is and how it works, but because, on a sound and correctly operating brake system (<repeat), it this cab be proven by disconnecting vacuum from the PB unit, driving, and pressing the brake pedal down as hard and often as desired in the quest to push it to the floor. Brake fluid is a liquid, as such it is incompressible, booster or no booster; if the pedal is going to the floor you do not have a PB booster problem; you do however, have a hydraulic problem.

Edit: have you checked the brake fluid level and is so, what was it?

I had replaced the booster about 6mo. ago and bled out all the brakes with fresh fluid. but I am going to disconnect the vacuum and see what happens it wont take long even in the driveway as soon as I let off the gas the peddle goes right to the floor been working on cars a long time never had a problem like this one. most of the time when the booster goes out the bellows fails and the brakes just dont work as well thus the reason it was replaced 6mo. ago. will let you know what I find

well it was most definitely the booster unhooked the vacuum line and the brakes worked as they should without power, hooked up the vacuum and all I had to do was touch the peddle and wham, the peddle went right to the floor so either the return spring or the atmospheric control valve inside the unit is totally screwed. So now, I can get a new one under warranty but I got it from pep boys andt Im a little gun shy of their product now. I might try to get my money back and go get a different kind altogether. At least now I no what it is, like I said earlier Ive been working as a mech for a long long time and never run across this before. Thanks guys for all the help and input keep it in mind if you ever run across this problem in the future Have a great day..

This omitted but important information actually would have been quite useful in the initial problem description in post #1, and would have been a game changer.......
