Default Backspacing and offset on a 17 inch wheel

So right now the wheels I have on my truck are from an Explorer and tend to rub at full lock. I was contemplating on buying spacers as a temporary fix but I want to see what kind of 17 inch wheels would fit my stock lift FX4? Right now the tires look too tucked in. From scanning through the wheel/tire picture gallery, it seems that most people pick wheels with backspacing ranging from 3.25 to I believe 3.75. The offset seems to vary between -15mm and -40mm.

I'm not trying to have them stick too far out, just to mainly get them in line with the fenders and avoid rubbing. If tire size helps, the tires on right now are 255/70/17.

I have a similar setup. My 93 has 2004 Explorer AWD wheels on it which I am going to swap out for another 17" wheel come spring however since the Explorer axles are I think an inch longer on each end [2" total] I added 1.25" spacers to make up for the difference.

It puts the wheels out where I wanted them more as before it was very narrow looking/feeling and on 33" DynaPro MT's it felt very top heavy.

These pics are with a 2" Leveling and a 1.75" rear lift due to a different spring pack setup to carry more weight. I had very little rubbing except for full lock and the rear tires would sometimes grab the fender lip and pull on it if i hit a deep pocket on the trails.

A 2" body lift cured that issue for now.

Thanks,

Its called a Flip-Pac, the company recently just went out of business unfortunately as the owner had a stroke and the workers felt like they couldn't go forward without him [small shop, I knew the people well]. However, supposedly another guy has purchased the rights and the same building to use and will attempt to continue. I moved to Vegas to start a business/shop and would like to sell them abroad so I am hoping the guy does what he said he would.

Ideally the truck "could" sleep more than it can legally carry but for me and the wifey its a slap the ARB fridge into the truck, grab the ammo, hit the grocery store, and bug out on a thought whenever we want to go camping or wheeling. Carry reserve tents, sleeping bags good to -15 degrees, amongst a host of other things at almost all times.

I'll be happier once I can afford the vehicle wrap material I want and it doesn't look like I should be serving Ice cream out of it... lol

quite a bits been done since the addition of it if you follow the build thread below..

How much were the spacers?

----------

I would however like to know the exact measurements of the ranger FX4 wheels and the explorer wheels. Those 17s on your 93 are what's on my 06. The best info I could find was: the ranger FX4 wheels are 16x7 with 13mm offset, and the explorer wheels are 17x7.5 with 44mm offset. So I think the wider wheel combined with the greater offset is what causes the tire to rub.

yea that info I dont have but I could possibly source it. As for cost of the spacers.. I have a business friend that manufactures them out of billet, I think I paid $100-125 for the set.

The new wheels I am looking at although offered in a 5 lug pattern are not offered in ours So I am going to order them with a +12mm offset and do a 5 lug to 6 lug conversion. but I wouldnt be doing that for at least a couple months. trying to figure out future suspension plans first hand.

I'm looking at some 17x9 Pro Comp wheels to use in replacement for the Explorer wheels on already. The wheel is 9 inches wide with 4.75 backspacking and -6mm offset. Looking at the backspacing and wheel width comparison chart, the offset is right for 4.75 backspacing on a 9 inch wide wheel. Would I be able to use a wheel like that without rubbing at lock? The tires are 10 inches wide.

I run 3.75bs on a 8" wheel with a 32x11 tire, no rub. A 9 with 4.75 with a 10" tore shouldn't pose an issue. I want to go 17x10 next.

Try playing with this.. I've used it for years.

That's a pretty nifty tool. So with using my guesstimations of the Explorer wheels having 44mm offset on a 7.5" wide wheel, the 17x9 would stick OUT 2" more than the current wheels. That should definitely fix the suspension rubbing problems, and also help fill out the wheel wells a bit. Thanks again for that tool!
