Default Can I replace all terrain tires (OEM) with all season tires on 4x4 Ford Ranger?

It is 2000 ext cab with "Off Road Package".

The all seasons are much cheaper and last longer. Does it really matter if I switch from the all terrains? I live in a snowy region, but never leave the road.

Thanks
Even though the instruction manual says to replace with all terrains?

I myself have a 2000 Ford Ranger extended Cab. Mine has a 6 inch lift on it and I went with the Mud Terrain. Looks better with better grip.

There is no reason you cant change to a different type of tire. Just make sure you keep the same size that was originally on. Changing the tire size may affect the ABS system, the 4x4 system, and may throw off your speedometer. Realisticly you may find that all-season tires may perform better all around the all-terrain tires. All-terrain tires look great and have a rugged look to them, but for on-road driving they kinda suck.

Many bought 4X4 vehicle for their personal reason, not the utility

No harm changing to more suitale tire

The all seasons tires will be fine as long as you don't expect the performance of the all terrain tires.

If you live in a snowy region you sure as heck don't want an M/T tire. A/Ts are much better suited to snow and sand than a M/T. Like the M/T implies....its main design function is to work well in mud....not snow.

UM, i beg to differ about hte M/T in snow... i grew up in the Northwest, snow is abundant and i had ran my first set of M/T just this last winter, and all i have to say is WOW! I had them siped and they got around better than anything i have ever driven before(i've got about 100,000 miles under my belt already), and in 4x4 i'd have that truck pinned without ever, I MEAN EVER, losing traction. The other tires just don't compare, thats my experience with em BTW i can count on one hand how many times i actually needed to use my 4x4 during the winter cause my tires did that well

As for sticking with stock tire size... that doesn't matter much, just as long as you adjust your gear ratio to the tire size. For instance, i plan on putting 35" tires on my ranger, but i'm going to be changing the gear ratio to 4.88 from 3.73. So just depends on what kind of money and what you're lookin to do with your truck. Sometimes putting a little bigger tire helps with fuel economy too IF you drive lots of hwy cause it will drop your rpms, which will reduce you're vehicles fuel consumption

I agree with both of you the A/Ts are btter on ice and slick roads but the M/Ts are better in deep snow and winter wheeling mud. If you live on back roads that don't get plowed good i'd say M/Ts if you live it town A/Ts. Thats why you see huge lifted trucks with 38-40 inch mudders in the summer and they drop down to stock tires in the winter.

hahahaha most trucks i see that are running huge tires in the summer run the same size M/T in the winter too... they just sipe em maybe. But i will say, i do live in the boonies where plows rarely come and drifts easily hit 3 ft across the road on more than a regular basis. I guess i'll have to try a set a A/T to see the difference in winter, thanks for the tip about the traction on ice!

Wide tires are also a no no in snow....I'd rather have a skinny tire that will dig for traction. I have a buddy with a short bed chevy on 44" swampers and a 454 and that thing is worthless in snow. Same goes for my other buddy running 40" boggers. I'll stick to my A/Ts in the snow just the same. I've driven a lot of miles in snow given that I grew up in Iowa in a farming community and I've been driving for 15 years. I have hundreds and hundreds of thousands of miles under my belt and I wouldn't have an M/T tire in the snow.

M/Ts have no buisness being on ice and handle like crap! It's like a slip n slide covered in KY. The best I have experienced and have had the same said from multiple state troopers in MN and WI say that the yokohamas handle the best in the winter for sure!!!
