The wires shouldn't be your problem. Clean the sensors first. It's easy and free. That may be your problem or a faulty sensor. I wouldn't suspect the pump to be bad, nor should you unplug it.

Re: ABS problems 2000 ranger
I meant as far as wires to unplug the ABS altogether. the truck has been sitting for most part of the last summer. just little driving around the yard is about it last 5-6 mths.

Re: ABS problems 2000 ranger
Not sure where your master cylinder is... but there is a big cube right behind the battery that says ABS on it... unplug any of the wires going to it and that should work. (Depending on where your master is you might have unplugged the right thing.

Do yourself a favor. Don't unplug anything. Take it to a real mechanic to have it diagnosed.

Stop giving advice RIGHT NOW. If you don't know where a master cylinder is, you have NO reason to be giving ANY advice on an ABS issue.

Calm down a little, I thought I read they were in different spots between autos and manuals, I know what it is though, and I know where mine is.
And isn't giving/receiving advice the reason we all joined FRF in the first place?

Finally, a voice of reason.
ABS is meant for wet/slick/slippery surfaces.

Re: ABS problems 2000 ranger
To the original person with the possibility of a problem, is your ABS light on at all? If it's not on...more than likely you don't have any electrical problem with the ABS system.

Ughh why would it differ from auto and manual? It's part of the braking system, not part of a transmission...

Ok, never dealt with a ranger, but on other trucks the module often will not set off the abs light when it is failing, often results in the abs system inhibiting stopping, and it thinks its doing its job so no light.
Maybe rangers are different but I know electrical abs issues do not always give a light. Often they do, sometimes they don`t.

Re: ABS problems 2000 ranger
Ill have to agree with KEALEL..thats why I came here is to look for opinions and advice. If I brought it to shop with every problem, there wouldn't be a forum. I know im smart enough to determine whats good and bad sugestions. This is how we learn how to fix our problems. Trial, error and experiences.I think I found what I need to know. Thanks Guys.

Whats the worse thing that can happen if he unplugs it? if it fixes the problem at least its safe to drive until he can get it fixed if he should chose to do so and if the problem persists, plug it back in, easy test and beats paying $120/hr to have someone else do the same thing.
Many mechanics have recommended unplugging of abs module, given never heard of anything on a ranger but on other older trucks its common practice. And besides like has been mentioned already older ABS is useless on snow and ice

Re: ABS problems 2000 ranger
Ok I see others are talking shit in another thread so I thought I'd post this video.
, it is clear to see that on ice abs does not help stopping capabilities, so while abs is to stop better on slippery surfaces if the surface is overly slippery abs will hurt the stopping capabilities. Yes most of the time abs helps but its not exactly perfect by any means, and if you know how you can stop a vehicle almost as well without abs on most surfaces and better on a few.

So you don't want to be able to steer while stopping?

You can steer without abs if you know how to stop with it, just don't let the front tires skid. I'm not here saying everyone go unplug your abs its way better without it, just saying its not near as effective as people think if you know how to stop a vehicle without it. If all you have ever driven is abs and haven't learned stopping techniques without it, by all means ABS is necessary.
Yes ABS is better, but not as much as some think (if you know how to stop without it)
