Ditto for the off road tires. You still need the traction and ability to steer they provide. Have you ever tried to steer in even shallow mud with street tires. There is a reason for the different types of tires.

Other than winter snow/ice, tire quality has jack $hit to do with propulsion. It is steering and stopping. You need all four wheels to steer and stop.

i buy tires two at a time, but it's because i run two different sizes. the front is a lower profile, narrower tire than the rear. i run wider tires out back.

but if you run the same size all around, and rotate as you are supposed to, you really shouldn't wear one or two out before the rest.

Actually, you might have to buy a 5th tire if you plan to buy bigger than factory size.

if you are really looking at doing some mudding then just buy all 4. your really going to regret it when you get into some mud and try and turn and the front end just slides. besides in my opinion it looks really stupid when people put mudders on the back but streets up front. and remember to just like Ranger Sport said, that if you go bigger your going to have to get 5 tires, one more so you have an equal size spare.

It's always best to replace all four of course, reason being is for traction. If you get caught in the rain and you have to hit the brakes, the tires in the back will definitely help out if you just replaced those, but say your going around a corner, and you replaced your rears, but not the fronts, depending on your speed and the tread depth of your fronts, you could easily just keep going forward which could cause you to crash into something. Not only that the legal tread depth is 3/32 in which you have to replace them. There are a lot of factors to why its best to replace all four, giving its necessary, so feel free to contact me with any tire and wheel questions. I work at Discount Tire / America's tire.

As for road noise I have Hankook 10 ply AT tires and they are as quite as the Uniroyal Street tires I had before them... they will take you anywhere your 2 wheel drive can go..

I agree with the buy 5 concept if your spare is not the same size. You haven't mentioned if you have a limited slip rear. That will come into play as well if you plan on still rotating your tires. Different sized tires on the same axle will ruin your LSD.

Thats true sandman, I actually found out that I have limited slip when I was swapping out my right rear axle, and replacing my differential fluid. Overall, rotations are necessary so that way you don't get uneven wear, which shortens the life of the tires. Also when getting new tires, its recommended that you get an alignment done as well. It helps with the wear of the tires over time. Just a little fact, recommended rotation of tires is between 3 and 6 thousand miles.
