Default Need help with tires!

Ok guys, I'm new to the whole truck thing and my new ranger needs new tires. Its a 2003 4x4 ranger XLT/Fx4 with 16x8 wheels. All of the tire sizes and numbers confuse me, I looked at the chart thats been posted on here and it says for my truck..16x8 stock suspension - 265x75x16, 285x75x16, 295x75x16(t-bar crank recommended and maybe trim.)

Can someone please tell me the hight of the tires that are recommended and how to identify this? Like I said I'm new to all this, I've also been looking at the BFG Mud Terrain and All Terrain's as well as the Nitto Mud and Trail Grapplers any words of advice on these 4 tires?

Thanks I really appreciate it!

265/75/16 roughly 31" around.

285 is roughly 33" around

Closer to 32", depending on the tire.

No. If I understand correctly:

295 = 295mm cross-section width
75 = 75% sidewall height / cross-section width ratio
16 = 16" wheel size

(295mm/25.4mm per inch) x 75% x 2 + 16" = approx. 33.4"

This depends on tread depth and pressure - only manufacturer's specs can tell you for sure. For BFG A/T's, it's closer to 33.2":

Ok so if the 265 is approximately a 32" and a 295 is around a 33.5" the 285 must fall somewhere in between correct? I sounds like I'd go with a 265... Also how big of a job is a torsion bar crank?

(265x.75)2 / 25.4 +16= 31.64 tall

265/25.4= 10.43 width

basically a 31x10.50

T bars are easy jack up front screw in the bolts evenly. I wouldnt screw them in all the way rides like shit! i actually went all the way and backed them off bout 1/3 of the way. drop the jack and done

Yeah - those are the specs for one BFG 265x75/R16, while another one from BFG comes in at 31.8, and one from Cooper comes in at 32.0. Splitting hairs, of course, but then with rounding you can be off an inch, which may make a difference. Manufacturer's specs are the best guide, IMHO.

Ok thanks for all of the info guys, in your opinions what size do you think I should go with out of the three and which tire out of the four I listed? Reasons for your choices would also be great just so I can learn some more about all this. Thanks!

Yeah - unfortunately I can't speak from experience here, 'cause I'm still running stock 255x70/R16's right now. If I had 16x8 wheels, I'd probably consider 285x75/R16's because I think they're the largest I would be comfortable trying without any type of lift. As it is, I have 16x7 wheels, so I may try 265x75/R16 since they're the widest I would want to put on those rims.

I have some time before I can afford to do anything, so I'll be considering my options until then.

Thanks for the opinions, I went over to my mechanic friend and he took a look at it and I told him I wanted some new tires. I told him the sizes i was interested in and the models and he said he did not recommend getting tires any larger than stock. He said that the truck was not designed to run larger tires and that if it were his truck that he would not upgrade. Should I listen to him and stick with the stock size or will the 285/295 sizes be alright? Any info will be greatly appreciated!

That calculator is a great tool for estimates. I did some more looking and found the Goodyear Wrangler MT/R with kevlar they seem to be less aggressive than the mud grapplers and mud terrains but still look good, they offer them in the 285/75/R16 anyone have experience with these?
