Default S.O.S 4X4 help?

What's up everyone, I havent posted pics of my 97 Ranger yet because I am still working on getting it into tip top shape. Put a new hood, bumper and grille on it...I thought body issues would be my only concern but recently the truck started making a winding/clanking noise while I am driving. Took it to the mechanic because I couldnt figure it out. He says it is the actual 4X4 Manual Hubs that are shot and need to be replaced...

Does this seem like an accurate assesment? If not what else could it possibly be? If so when I go to buy the new hubs...what should I get...23 or 27 teeth? I called the dealership and apparently my truck is supposed to have automatic hubs, but it doesnt...I know the best bet is to take em off and count em myself but i figured id ask.

At this point I am starting to go nuts a little bit...

Any and all help is appreciated. Thanks all.

Your truck is supposed to have auto hubs I believe, someone has probably swapped some manual ones on.

Yea I think that's the case...I found some good hubs for sale on ebay decently priced, But I want to be certain of the splines before I go ahead and purchase em. Guess i'll just have to take the wheels off and count em. Thanks for your input...

The manual hubs are more reliable then an auto hub.

So i'm told, which is why i am more than ok with having them...just need to know which ones to buy so I dont waste time. The sound is really starting to get on my nerves so I wanna fix it asap. Just need to know the spline count.

You really should pull one and count it. That's the easiest way to find out

----------

Everything I seen on Google says 97 ranger front axles are 27 spline.

Spline count? Just order locking hubs for a 97 Ranger. They started using the D35 around 1990, so 91-96 hubs would probably work too. The hubs you need look like little top hats.

Since you have a 4.0, you don't have to worry about different axle splines. Only the 4 banger and 3.0 owners need to worry about spline count because some of those trucks were equipped with dumb little hybrid axles. They were D35 axle beams, but had D28 differential parts. And D28's have a smaller spline count than the D35.

Now if you're buying used hubs, then spline count does matter, but you just need to know the spline count of the hubs you're buying.

Much appreciated, I just needed to make sure that I didnt waste time with ordering/returning.
