Default changing tire valve stem

I found out today that my air leak is on the valve stem. Just as I was about to post system showed there were threads about a valve stem seal. I don't know what a valve stem seal is but does it need replaced too? Is changing the valve stem something I could do at home by myself or is it best to take it somewhere?
Thanks!

To change a valve stem you would normally have the tire off the rim to get the rubber piece off on the inside. If you don't care about that rubber piece (full rubber stems) then rip it off and the inside rubber will fall in the tire. Then push a new stem in the hole and fill with air. But if you do that then you will have a piece of rubber boucing inside the tire

Default Re: changing tire valve stem

well a valve stem seal is what makes contact with the rim. What I usually do at work is i break the bead lose on the side of the tire with the valve stem then I push it down with the machine (you could have someone stand on it) and i cut the old valve stem seal off around the edges.. but be careful not to let any little rubber parts go in the tire then when ive cut enough i grab some pliers and pull it out.. then i lube the new valve stem and pull the new one through from the inside of the rim out.. I would recommend you take it to a shop man we do this all the time at work and its not expensive at all.. a tire place should do it no problem. BUT before you do that.. have you checked your Schrader valve to see if thats not whats leaking?? its the little pin thingy that you push in when you bleed air out or fill it up.. they have a little tiny rubber belt around them that wears out sometimes.. you should take the cap off and rub some spit or soapy water on it with your finger if it starts to bubble then the Schrader valve is messed up.. all you do is take screw it off with a schrader valve tool and screw a new one in

Valve stem seals are usually an engine part. Valve stems are the things on your wheel.
