What could have happened?
Driving along 35 mph and the wheel just split into 2 pieces down the middle. Anyone have this issue with alloy's before?

Not at all, but you are ultimately correct. I just got back from a long inspection. The lower bolt sheared into allowing the caliper to come forward when I braked and ...... you know the rest.
Looks like it's a bolt failure due to what I do not know since I don't know the trucks history. Could have been overtightened by a user, brake tech, bolt could be old and metal fatigued... just don't know. All that is certain is it sheered off in to 2 pieces and the rest is history.
You get the CSI gold star.

Re: What could have happened?
yeah i had a caliper bolt back out before but it wasnt a bolt that holds the caliper to the mount, it was a bolt that holds the mount to the spindle. i fixed it after only about 5 miles of driving and it still left a scar on the inside of my wheel, not bad though not enough to worry about

Re: What could have happened?
Anyone have the specs of that bolt so I can find another? it's one of the two large bolts. The bottom one. I can lift the whole damn thing off the rotor and spin it upwards with just the top one in.

Re: What could have happened?
Believe it's M12-1.75 by like 50mm. I don't know for sure though.
Usually, they back out and fly off and it is suprisingly common. Not just totally fail.

Re: What could have happened?
Surprisingly common. Comforting. Out of the 13 rangers I have had since 1997 I've never seen it on any of my trucks, but hey........ that stopped tonight so never say never.
