First with aluminum you will need an etching primer after either bead blasting or sanding, but the clear coat has to come off.
Let it set for a few hours and then the paint.
No gloss black, gunmetal is nice or a Semi-Gloss Blk, something like a denim-black (not sure if that is a color.
DuPont makes a good etching primer, if you want a good base, bead blast the rims, have a body shop spray on the Industrial Strength of the DuPont Etching Primer (at good Auto Paint Store) a little heavier than it should be then sand it smooth.
Spray with a color from the DuPont pallet of colors.

No matter what rattle can etching primer is the minimum requirement ($7/can) and try to stick to the same manufacturer for the top coat but not a must do.

It's personal opinion but I think it's too dark even with gun metal. Maybe a darker shade of gray would be better?

Definitely a fan of the center cap staying the same. Can't wait to see pictures and hear how it goes, I've been thinking of doing this to mine.
