You really don't need to mask off the tires. After you clean the wheels VERY good with something like brake cleaner, let them dry, and spray away. I used close to a can on each wheel. Just take a nylon bristle brush to the tires, the dip will come right off them. My wheels were off the truck, and I let them sit for a few weeks before I put them on.
I ran them all last winter with zero problems.

On edit, pay close attention to the rim area when cleaning. The rim is the outside edge of the wheel, not the whole wheel, as in, people calling wheels, "rims".
