Default Sand blasting alloy rims?

Was wondering if it's ok to sand blast my stock 5 spoke 16" alloy wheels the clear coat starting to come off in some places and a little rust I don't want to change the color just have them looking like new stoke rims and re clear them so can you sand blast them or is there something special you have to do them?

I had the same thought a few months back. I can't see why there would be a problem, as long as the guy doing the sandblasting wasn't a caveman with a lack of wrist motion. In other words, done just enough to remove the clearcoat. I wound up just getting rid of the peeling clearcoat, and plastidipping them.
If you did this, I suspect you'd have to repolish them, then use clearcoat.
There are some companies out there that will refinish them, but by the time you pay the bill, you may as well buy new wheels. In my case, that's what I did, and now have two complete sets of tires and wheels, one for nice weather, and one for winter.
I may do something different to my nice wheels for next winter though.

BTW, not doubting your observation, but what colour is the rust? Red, like rusting steel, or white like aluminum. Yes everyone, red rust and white rust are both oxidation. I always thought.

Here's my a link to my wheel project thread.
http://www.fordrangerforum.com/wheel...continues.html

I also now have 3 different sets of rims so on one of them in the spring I'm going to try sandblasting them to see how it comes out, since nobody I've found has had an answer as to whether or not this works or screws them up in anyway.

Well for one it won't screw them up at all. If you want yor wheels powder coated first thing they do is sand blast them. The whole thought of keeping the stock color you would have to repaint them you will and I mean will go down to bare alum. That color is a paint the factory does paint them then epoxy clear coat them.

Ok awesome. I've asked before and nobody could really say for sure lol. That's great. Because sanding those bastards by hand takes FOREVER

Keep them washed if you can, I'm sure they will stay nice.

You could blast them and re-clear them. But they may not look the same. It would take a very fine blasting to remove the old clear and not texture the aluminum.

Really not trying to be a smartass, this time, but, am I seeing this correctly? It looks like red rust on the rim of that wheel, are you sure those aren't steel?

I have a set of explorer rims I wanna do. The clear is peeling on them. I like the factory color. But might mask them and paint them black.
