I would love someone who knows about ford trucks specifically my 95 4.0 L Ranger. I have been having a lot of little issues lately and would like for a knowledgable person to drive it around with me and try to help me figure some issues or possible causes to issues before I dump any more money into it.

Work I have done so far: Replaced battery, replaced fuel pump, All new shocks, breaks, drums, replacing fuel filler neck and fuel filter this week.

Issues: Ocasionally stops eccelerating while driving (bogs down?), ocassionally will not start-(cranks will not turn over) after trying a few times maybe it starts or leave it for a while come back, also turn key on let sit a minute or two then crank and it will start, Fuel gauge seems to be eratic, till I get filler neck can not fill up tank or it will overflow. I only put $20 at a time, after puting gas in gauge says around half a tank, the next day it coul be at a 1/4, drive it home could be back around a half or even down at E.

i have a buddy who's from the denver area. he said his car didnt run correctly (bogged down, lack of power) and he was thinking it has something to do with thinner air up in the mountains. not really sure how accurate that sounds but it might help you out. fuel gauge...i wouldnt worry about it. mine will never go above 3/4 even with a full tank in it. if you know the gas tank is full then it's full. unless, as hanzosteel said, someone is siphoning it.

hanzosteel- If someone is steeling my gas they must follow me around, take some then next time I go to drive it they have put it back in lol. I live in 5 points off doning in denver but would drive to aurora if yoiu could take a look at it.
jacam- I just think the gauge being out of wack could point to another problem since I was not having this issue till about a month ago when the not starting sometimes, and bogging down started. Have not had any issues with the bogging down lately. Did drive it to work the other day and every stop sign or light it would die and I would start it up again. Fun drive to work lol.

lol doesnt sound the best way to get from a to b. how far of a drive is it to work from your home? is that about the only driving you do with your ranger?

Check the fuel pump, they have two short rubber lines on them, a supply and a return line. these do get dry wrought and will pump you gas straight back into the tank cutting your pressure way down to where the vehicle sometimes won't start. Also sounds like your fuel filter is plugging up which will cause a droop in power from time to time plus sporadic non starts then sitting a few minutes and it starts. These both happened a lot on my 98 ranger. As for your gauge not really sure on that one.

So figured out yesterday when the truck would not start that the problem is in the ignition. I did notice lately it was a little off but did not think it was the issue. When it would not start yesterday I played with the ignition realighning it several times, it finally started. To prove that was the cause shut it off. Tried to start it would not, so I messed with the ignition a little more and boom it starts. On the plus side I will not get stranded. Down side I am no good with electrical issues and not sure how to fix it. I will check the lines to the pump you suggested that might be the bogging down issue (has not done that in a little over a month) but the filler neck had dry rot for sure. Gauge..... guess I will just have to use my best judgment for now on how much gas is in there till I can come up with a solution.

It's 6 miles to work not far. I mianly use the truck for work, self-employed so I try to keep work miles to one vehichle for tax deductions. I use either my explorer (gas guzzler) or my boyfriends Hynduai for personal uses. Read my last reply I think I found the not starting cause, and going to try checking some lines and running injector cleaner threu the engine to see if it helps with bogging down (which has not happened for a while now)

i'm glad you mentioned the fuel cleaner. up here in mn in the wintertime if the engine has a bunch of short trips, moisture that gets into the compression chamber, gas tank, etc. never gets evaporated. the engine never fully warms up. this can result in a lot more moisture than normal, which can lead to the bogging down, rough idling, etc. i'm not sure if the climate is the same as we have down in denver, but just a thought. a way to try and keep moisture out of the fuel system is to keep the gas tank as full as you can. but i would give fuel cleaner a try for now as well as the fuel lines and see what happens from there. glad you figured out the ignition problem.

So fuel lines seem to be in working order. They look used, older but fine. They are not hard and I did not see any dry rot. I filled up and put some injector cleaner, Even having a full tank it seems to run better, For at least 2 months I would never put more than half a tank in due to the fuel filler neck being busted did not want it to overflow again (embarrassing). So I will drive it for a bit and see if anything persists or gets better/worse.

If your'e still having problems with an erratic fuel guage, the sender in the tank might be going bad, had the same problems with my van and replaced it. Hope someone can help you to replace the filler neck, alot of moisture can build up in the bottom of the tank.

Is sender an easy repair? Ball park figure how much do they cost? I assume I have to drop the tank again to get to it?

you can drop the tank but it might be faster and easier to take the bed off.

I had the same type of problems happening to my 2003 - ended up replacing the fuel pump module in the tank. Not sure if yours is the same configuration, but if it is, get ready for a sticker shock on the module, even if you don't get it from Ford
