Is it illegal to drive without a bed in California?
I was gonna paint my bed and leave it in my garage while I put more coats on so it can dry properly. Is it illegal to drive without the bed in california, if I have the license plate and brake lights mounted?

You should be good, but be sure you keep the bumper mounted too.

This. Bed or not, there are definitely very specific bumper laws that apply.
Driving in the scenario you described would be illegal as you have no fenders. There's probably some additional penal codes you're violating as well...

as long as you have mud flaps, a bumper, and all the proper lights firmly attached to your vehicle, you won't get hassled. i've done it, and know others who have too
