As to cold air and whether or not it produces horsepower if there were no benefit to it why is every car currently built including your Evo using a cold air intake?
Have you been looking in my garage? The only reason I have an open element intake is that of the fact I have an HTA3582R turbocharger connected to this said intake. The stock airbox is only a non-restriction until 400whp, and I've far passed that.

Quote:
The theory is sound. Cold air is more dense, which means there is more oxygen in the air fuel mix causing better and more complete combustion. If the theory was bad then turbo's and nitrous would not work.
It's not any colder than the stock intake. Turbochargers make the air warmer than it was prior to being past the compressor outlet. The fuel trims are adjusted to stoic no matter what the intake temperature is.

Quote:
I know that this is no where near nitrous but the base theory is the same.
Nitrous Oxide seperates the useless Nitrogen in the charge into Oxygen. Totally different.

What you aren't comprehending is this. The stock intake already allows the engine to pull in more air than it needs. You adding some expensive fancy looking thing on the intake is not going to let it pull in more. It only needs X amount of air. It already can supply X+10. You making it able to suck in X+12 is not going to make a difference if it still only needs X. The electrical service off the pole feeding your house can supply 1,000 amps at 240 volts. Your vacuum cleaner doesn't suck up more dirt because the telephone pole is fused at 1,000 amps. The vacuum cleaner still only uses 7 amps.

And you continue to make my point for me. NOTHING you do to the intake will make a difference that is noticeable to you sitting in the seat. It is all in your head. It did nothing. Its been proven over and over. I don't expect you to like it. But that just the way it is.

How do you "use up" an air box? How does a plastic box only last 100,000 miles...

Buying a CAI for the purpose of gaining horsepower or MPG on a NA engine is pointless since you're already pulling in as much cold air as you'll ever need. I'm not sure how a steeda CAI could possible be any better then the stock intake. It does look cool though and I'm glad you and your son got to wrench on your car together. Thats always a good thing, hopefully you let him work on the dart and chevelle as well so he knows what real american muscle is.

I keep hearing all about the expensive or fancy intake that my son just installed but it was less than half the price of replacing the stock air box. The stock air box is a non-servicable part that costs $470.00 to replace. The system that I bought was $230.00 and took my 12 year old son a half hour to replace. I really wasn't looking for an increase in horsepower, I simply stated that there was a noticable difference between the stock intake and the new intake. The intake that I purchased from Steeda is produced specifically for the 2005-2007 focus and the MAF housing is machined to match the stock MAF housing. You may not like what I did to MY car but it is MY CAR and I don't need to ask any of you if I should make a modification on it. I searched the threads on cold air intakes and both of you seem to like to run down anyone who makes any kind of intake modification that doesn't fit your agenda. I could have spent thousands of dollars on a turbo or torn the engine down to port and polish the heads or whatever major modification you would have been happy with but that is not what this car is for. I own two muscle cars for that. You seem to take my simple statement that I noticed a horsepower increase as some sort of attack against your brilliance, but I didn't give enough information on my post for you to jump to the conclusions that you did. Yes I feel defensive when I post pictures of my son working on my car and get attacked as some kind of idiot because my modification isn't what you like. That is a personal attack that was undeserved. I am sure that the cars that you drive are nice and you are proud of them and I apologize for running the evo down. This forum should be about sharing an interest in what we drive not about calling someone you don't know stupid because you don't like what they did to their car.

#1: It has nothing to do with an "agenda". Its just a simple fact. A few of us happen to take that simple FACT rather seriously. Mostly because it is nice to save people the time, effort, and money of doing silly useless "mods" like this. Apparently too late for you.

#2: None of this has anything to do with your son. You bought it and you are claiming you feel the difference in your ass when driving down the road. We all know that is total non-sense and has nothing to do with your kid installing it. This is the equivilent of pouring a bottle of octane booster in the gas tank and claiming you feel more power. I used to think that when I was 16.

#3: Nothing you've said has run anything else down. Someone claiming an expensive air filter made them more power is probably not going to run much of anything down, other than perhaps a lawn mower.

The newer Focus comes with a non servicable air box. I am not sure of the exact theory behind it but there is no servicable air filter in it. It was designed to go for 100,000 miles and then be changed. You don't want to know how many times the oil change places tried to sell me an air filter. I didn't buy the intake for an increase in HP or MPG. I bought it because it was a cheaper alternative to replacing the air box and was servicable in the future. I looked into all of the usual suspects who build intakes and this was the only one built specifically for my engine and tested specifically for my engine. I never claimed to build massive horsepower as everyone thinks that I have I simply said that I noticed a difference. And my boys will learn the difference between american muscle and asian muscle.

Nice to see someone else wrenching on their own car and showing their son how to learn to do their own stuff. My dad runs a muffler/service shop and by working with him I have learned life values, work ethics, and skills I will value until the day that I die. And since apparently no one else does, I actually understand you when you say that it was a cheaper alternative. And everyone else can say what they want, but it is YOUR car and if it makes you happy, then there you go

I'm with these guys

I don't know where we all got off on the wrong foot. But it's cool to see a Dad that is willing to work with his son on a project however miniscule, redundant, or stupid it may seem to the rest of us. It may not add hp or efficiency but Jred and his son had a good time and bonded. I wish my Dad had the same interest in cars I do, so to see something like this is cool to me. Let's all smile, fart, drink a beer and get on with our lives.

First of all I owned a 1999 Ford Taurus 3.0 Vulcan V6 for a few years. During the Winter months when the air was colder, I seen a mass improvement in performance from the car, response wise I didn't have to mash the gas nearly at all to get it to go faster. It would get up and go.

Same goes with my ranger. I have done nothing to the intake however, to either of those vehicles. The winter months do make differences, and any person that has ever been to Bristol and drag raced will tell you that up there most cars will run quicker then at other lower elevated tracks, where the air is denser...

I am sorry to say but you ever drove through Arizona? I bet not. Very hot during the summer, hot enough that its nothing to see people pulled off to the side road because their vehicle has over heated... Which could be a number of things, but down here I hardly ever see that. So it tells me that heat plays a factor in performance... The hotter the vehicle is running the shittier, so rather the denser air or the colder weather makes it better, I can notice a difference in the winter months, then I can in the summer, and those guys drag racing aren't posting fake times in Bristol, so yeah if I had to look at colder air effecting vehicles, I'd say yes it does play a roll on how they perform.

Rather or not a silly K&N filter makes this better or not. The factory filter is actually cold air, putting a cone filter under the hood, seems to me like more of a warm air intake since it'd possibly be closer to the hot motor, pulling in warm air. As for intakes the best thing is probably a RAM air system, those are pretty good, they do add about 5HP which is small, but at least its proven, and known about.

I'd say leave it factory before I'd go messing about with some of those 230 dollar intakes. They do look cool, but really I doubt they do much.

I ain't going to call the guy stupid or nothing. I am a lot nicer then some of these people who seem to just attack people. I mean fuck his 12 year old son installed it, thats pretty good for a 12 year old kid. Get them started early..

This attacking crap happens a lot on here. I seen a nother post where someone was attacked for posting about cops and yellow lights. I mean some guys with larger post counts or as I call it (bigger e-penises) completely told the guy he was a douche bag for having yellow lights... Down right rude. I am almost considering another ranger forum. I came here for the same reason for information, and people to chat with about the same interest in my truck. I keep reading these threads.. makes me not wanna be here... This was the most knowledgeable forum, and I chose it because it looked like a nice forum.

When injected in a vaporous state to the intake air of an internal combustion engine, the resultant heat of compression (on the compression stroke of the engine) breaks down the nitrous oxide compound into inert nitrogen and free oxygen available to support the combustion of extra fuel. This means more fuel can be burned than air alone would support. Burning more fuel releases more heat, which creates more expansion of the working fluid (mostly nitrogen) in the cylinder for more pressure on the piston. The "N" in the N2O reacts with other "N"s to form "N2s", some of which is in the inert air charge, some of which are original "Ns" from the "N2Os".. Thats what happens when I think faster than I type.

So injecting nitrous oxide is like taking your truck to an oxygen bar...increase the oxygen in the system and you get WHEEE!!!!!!
