Um....yeah. It's called being an entrepreneur. And having them out there working the field and possibly taking your jobs from you is called competition. Happens in every single trade.

Yup. Again, it has happened in every trade. Maybe not construction as much, since even small time guys like myself can't get the jobs, and it makes us all have to be a lot more competitive in our pricing. You gotta learn to live with it bud, especially if you're going to run a business.

I've had my contractors license for two years now. 2009 was an awesome year, 2010 sucked. You'll find that now that the economy has gone in the pooper that you're going to have to REALLY be competitive with your prices in order for people to look to you for lawn care rather then getting a cheap mower from Home Depot or Lowe's. I've bid 12 jobs so far in 2011, and have only gotten 1 super simple remodel that only netted me $300. That's a pretty rough start considering that in the first quarter of 2010 (even though it was bad) I took home roughly $4,000.

I'm wishing the best of luck to ya for doing the landscaping thing full time this coming summer. I've getting the feeling that this year is going to be absolutely horrible for any kind of labor trade.

I started my own little lawn mowing/snowplowing business when I was 13. I only mow a few lawns because I also have a full time job during the summer, but during the school year I do lots of fall cleanups and snowplowing with my atv. Heres some pics of my stuff!

Not mine but the exact same one I use for a few lawns...

Again not mine but its the exact same one I use...

And what I plow with...

I have to agree with Jimmeh, I see the same thing in the agriculture sector. People who could care less about agriculture decide they can make a quick buck shoveling shit or picking strawberries. They do the job, get paid, then happily go home. Where someone like me does the job, goes the extra mile, doesn't worry alot about pay since I love the job, and then reluctantly goes home. It's sad, but it's life, and it's the way of the world. Eventually the economy should pick up, all these "outsiders" will say fuck shoveling shit, and then i'll be able to rake in the money, and the shit more often.
