Bobcats are a lot better than CAT (in my and my works opinion)... We were making boulder retaining walls at work and we rented the biggest CAT skid loader but it could pick up just as much as our midsize bobcat could pick up the boulders so we rented the biggest bobcat and it picked the up no problem (would have said model number but I forget)

There's more than one model per size, and the rental places don't usually rent the larger ones with the bells & whistles. The CAT rental store only had up to the middle size machines.
The lifting capacity is very close to the same when comparing different brands of similar models.
Not saying CAT is best, but you said you rented. Meaning you don't have long term exp (like owning the machine) to show mechanical problems. We had brand new Bobcats at United and they literally were down all the time for all kinds of stuff

Ya we got the CAT we rented from the CAT rental store but we got the biggest bobcat and they were the same size but the CAT was a little more beat up (the bobcat was like new but the CAT was in ok condition) but the CAT was nice for a couple other things we used it for but my boss says bobcats are the best things he's used yet (more than the two brands)
You probably know more about them though than I do since you worked at the rental place

I think bobcat is just the 800lb gorilla they've made their name synonymous with skid steers.
In my opinion I prefer the Gehl brand of skid steer. Mainly because all the machine movement and bucket controls are all on the two sticks. No foot pedals.

They pretty much all have all joystick controls nowadays. At least the larger better models we're talking about

The machine was a skid steer. Bobcat makes more than just skid steers
