Default Re: Rangers With Camper Shells/Topper Thread

Im looking at getting one of these pretty soon. There are a lot in c-list right now. None of them have my color though and I am concerned about the total cost after paint.

I looked through pages 1-50 of this thread and didnt see anyone plasti-dip the cover for short term money saving. Has anyone done this? I have the graphite/gunmetal gray color Ranger and the plastidip Gunmetal looks similar. I dont want to keep it like that, but right now beige and white seem to be the available used Toppers in my area. Am I a doofus for thinking that? Also, ~$350 is what they are going for used around me, is that too much?

is it a Stepside or regular bed? And what condition are they in? $350 seems a bit pricy for a used topper. That's a brand new condition.

As long as you clean and prep it there's no reason plastidip wouldn't adhere to your topper. And $350 for what topper? Its on the higher side for a basic topper; cab height, optional sliding windows, with FUNCTIONING locks and key included, working third brake light, and in good condition. Or it could be low if it has flip up side windows or interior lights, carpeted walls/ceiling. Etc

You guys are smokin something pretty serious, if you think $350 is too much for a used cap in good condition. Brand new caps are upwards to $1k for a decent brand name. And for a refrance for "kestrel" i paid $270 to get my used cap repainted. And paid about $220 for the cap itself. Mine is a Leer.

I got a regular cab, 6ft bed, no step side.

One of the toppers is a Leer that seems pretty new with roof rack rails, all seem to have sliding side windows with screens. I havent checked any of them yet (I plan to this weekend), so not sure on the hydraulics, mounting hardware is included in most. The only issue I have seen so far is some do NOT come with keys/locks. Honestly, the only 100-200 ones I have been able to scout out around here are the worker truck models on fleet trucks that I am trying to avoid.

Reason I asked about the plasti-dip is because it seems like a good cheap alternative to getting it painted while I save up funds. I got a feeling painting by me might be more than $270. Hell, my motorcycle tank after I prepped it was quoted for 180... I did all the prep work, one guy wanted 400... I might have to drive to get it painted to a cheaper area.

Also, no one seems to state the model of the toppers on c-list. That kind of bothers me...

dont be too concerned about hydralics, they are dirt cheap to replace. Keys are easy to replace as well. As long as they are in good shape for example, windows arnt broken no chips or crack in the cap itself i would pay $350 for one. Hell you can drive with it not matching until funds are saved for a repaint if that doesnt bother you.

Default Rangers With Camper Shells/Topper Thread

I don't think $350 is unreasonable. Definitely bargain the price down if you can and if they won't take the time to set the shell up on the truck to see how it fits then don't bother. I think my first shell ever I paid $200 and had it painted for $200. It was gunmetal as well.

Nice pics! Ya, hopefully my refund check this year will cover it!

Also, by me new toppers LEER/ARE cost like 1100-1800+ new painted and installed. I didnt think 350 was TOO much. Of course cheaper is better if its in reasonable condition. Hope some of the deals I found dont fall through by this weekend.

$350 is kinda high around these parts as well. Average seems to be $200 and below for a styleside. Flaresides like mine are much less common so they tend to run a little more. Picked up mine for $300 and it is in perfect condition.

Quite a few more are starting to pop up. Is there a difference in fits between the differet years? I have the 2011 XL shortbed (6ft). Will all ranger 6ft toppers fit?
