Default The Volt (non Ford)

So a former student from Missouri S&T works at GM now and works on the new Volt. We have our career fair tomorrow, so he drove it down to show us.

I'm sure a few of you have read about this thing. But I got a lot of info, some even that you guys don't know about.

So it has a gas motor driving the generator, and 2 electric motors, one running the front wheel and one charging the battery.

There is no mechanical drive, all electric. It has a very intricate clutch sytem.

0-60 in under 9 seconds. 3700lbs. 40 mpg avg. He drove it from Michigan to Missouri on one charge.

Any other questions just ask, or go look it up lol

If I could afford one I'd buy it, I built an electric vw fox a couple years ago.
I think electric cars are the way of the future as they were in our past.
a good movie to watch is called " WHO Killed The Electric Car"

it opened a lot of eyes

I am getting frustrated with hybrids. Small diesel engines get WAY more MPG , are cheaper, and most of the time faster. The VW clean diesels are averaging better than the Volt and have been out for a few years now.

i agree. as long as the volt has been in the making its already outdated as far as mileage and was surpassed by non hybrid vehicles a couple years ago. ive heard of this volt in the making for a while now. its a cool technology for sure but its going to have to get way better mileage than that for me to want to have an expensive, not as fast and not as convenient hybrid vehicle.

It's made by Government Motors. I have no interest in it.

IMO they went wrong from the start for three reasons.

First off its 3700lbs. Really?, that's heavy as hell for a small to midsize car. Having an engine batteries and two motors will do that, its a linchpin.

Second, you plug it in to charge it. Guess where most of our electricity comes from, burning coal.

Third, those batteries will be expensive as hell to replace and will pollute the environment once they are discarded.

x2 cool yes, but will do more harm when they have to be replaced then the good they do in the mean while. TDI is the way we should of gone period. Because once we run out a actual fuel. Its called bio diesel. Next small displacement car I get will be a VW TDI without a doubt.

The battery is $10K.

It comes with an 8 yr/100,000 mile warranty, so you could get it replaced

i seen a pre production volt going down the highway, looked ugly from the back, plus i heard its going to be really expensive, and to top that off those batteries dont last forever. Verdict, overpriced cheap crap made to sound really really good. If fuel price skyrockets, i'd throw a 4bt in my ranger.

40K but you get 3750 back after taxes

The warranty would probably cover 1 replacement battery. But the engineer I talked to who I working on it said they are already working on the next version of the battery which will last longer and hopefully be smaller.

I'm not buying one, but I just thought I'd show you guys what I saw and what I learned
